We're researching the impact of drumming on the behaviour and physical performance of children with learning difficulties and autism

Our students make a difference in sport and physical activity settings. Their passion for improvement means they’re always looking for ways to push the boundaries of what’s possible. Impact-driven Research

Here are just a few of the projects our students and staff are working on to advance the field of sport, exercise and health. Enhancing performance in elite youth football. Our strength and conditioning staff have been working with one of our undergraduate students to use scientific advances to improve performance. By analysing eccentric resistance training practices, their findings will inform how these techniques can be best used in the physical development of youth footballers. Drumming and health benefits for children with learning difficulties. We've been hosting drumming sessions for children with autism and learning difficulties, as part of the ground-breaking Clem Burke Drumming Project. We’ve seen a marked improvement in children’s motor skills. We’ll be looking at the impact on behaviour and physical performance. Study into children’s fitness will inform national policy. One of our postgraduate students has been researching childhood obesity and physical activity. Findings have sparked the development of an intervention programme, which will inform government policy on physical activity within primary education.

Our students learn from experts, using world-class facilities to improve their own performance and analyse the performance of others. This forms an excellent base for their final-year dissertations. Our students and lecturers collaborate with national sporting bodies to raise standards across all sports. Findings are often published or presented at conferences to make a real difference in the sporting world.
