2.02 INSTRUCTOR GUIDANCE – CHOKING STATION (OPTIONAL)

Objectives: Demonstrate how to properly manage a choking patient (conscious and unconscious)

Setup:

- Choking manikin - Baby Anne with obstructed airway inserts - BVM (adult and Peds)

Instructions to be read to students: “I am going to demonstrate choking management. We will all practice this multiple times until you are all comfortable with it and can do it without hesitation.” Precautions: DO NOT allow students to do anything other than landmark on each other. Use a manikin for these skills drills

Please note the following:

- Have students demonstrate airway maneuvers using a choking manikin of an ACT FAST choking trainer. Students really like seeing the bolus fly out of the patient.

- Make sure you demonstrate and practice:

o Standard adult choking (abdominal thrust)

o Pregnant woman (chest thrust)

o Self-heimlich using chair

o Unconscious choking maneuvers:

1. Look in mouth

2. Ventilate

3. If no chest rise, reposition head and try again

4. Ventilate

5. Start CPR (30 compressions is fine)

6. Look in mouth (this is critical because the object will not make a 90 degree turn in the airway and eject when the patient is unconscious – emphasize this to the student)

7. Ventilate

8. Go back to step 3 if no chest rise
