2.03 INSTRUCTOR GUIDANCE – SIMPLE MASK, VENTURI MASK, PULSE OXYMETRY, HUMIDIFICATION

Objectives: Demonstrate use of pulse oximetry. (pp 334–335, Skill Drill 9-1)

Demonstrate the use of a Venturi and Simple Mask in providing supplemental oxygen therapy to patients. (pp 352–353)

Demonstrate the use of a humidifier in providing supplemental oxygen therapy to patients. (p 353)

Setup: - Oxygen system: Oxygen tank, regulator, CPAP system - Simple Mask, Venturi Mask, Pulse Oxymeter, humidifier - ET3 System - EMT manikin with arms for SPO2 station - Little Anne or other quality manikin for mask stations

Instructions to be read to students: “I am going to demonstrate use of these three devices. You may not carry them all in your ambulance if you work for a 911 service, but you will occasionally encounter them if you do medical transportation ”‘

Precautions: Do not let the station deteriorate into chatter. Continue rotating them through assemblies until time is up.

Please note the following:

- Demonstrate use of each device. Do not take more than 5 minutes. Venturi mask will be the most involved. - Discuss that in long transports (particularly in medical transportation of patients who are on oxygen for days at a time) humidification of oxygen keeps mucous membranes from drying. While it may be very common in 911 service, oxygen humidification is something they shold be familiar with. - Discuss possible pitfalls of pulse oximetry such as BP cuff use on that arm, poor distal perfusion, dirty hands, nail polish (questionable), etc.

- Remind students CO poisoning can be misleading with pulse oximetry

- You should absolutely be using ET3 for the SPO2 station so students can see the pulse oximetry readings fluctuate
