K-12 Computer Science The Riverside County Office of Education (RCOE), in conjunction with K-12 school districts across Riverside County, is actively leading the following computer science efforts:

Corona-Norco, Desert Sands, Hemet, Jurupa, Lake Elsinore, Moreno Valley, Murrieta, PalmSprings, Perris Union, Riverside, San Jacinto, Temecula, Val Verde — RCOE hosts an annual STEM Fair in partnership with Bourns, Inc. , a private global technology company head quartered in the City of Riverside —Other examples of computer science related activities from individual districts includes: • GirlsWho Code clubs in Val Verde and Riverside • Robotics courses , clubs, and competitions in Perris Union and Corona-Norco • Makerspace initiatives in Jurupa and San Jacinto • Michael Towne, a teacher at Citrus Hill High School in Perris, developed a new Physics and Engineering program that grew from41 students in 2001 to 350 students by 2009. “More than a quarter of the Mexican-American students who passed the Advanced Placement Physics Electricity and Magnetismexam in California [in 2012] came from [Michael Towne’s] classroom.” www.pe.com/2014/05/30/education-teacher-saluted- for-opening-doors-for-students/

Additional K-12 computer science highlights in conjunction with UCR include: — Riverside Unified School District (RUSD) will construct a new STEM academy high school located on the UCR campus. www.pe.com/2017/07/08/new-high-school-at-uc- riverside-will-teach-science-to-riverside-students/ — RUSD has partnered with UCR to host free summer coding camps aimed at girls. ucrtoday.ucr.edu/46063 — The Riverside County Education Collaborative is working with local school districts, community colleges, and UCR to decreasemath and English remediation rates for Riverside County students. One such effort is the “Race to Rigor” challenge that increases student’s access and success in coursework, partially through amonthly AP Readiness camp at UCR. www.rcec.us/race-to-rigor/ RCEC has been so successful at increasing students’ college applications and FAFSA financial aid application completion, that it has received $1.75million from the Bill andMelinda Gates Foundation to continue this work.

— RCOE is partnering with Riverside Unified School District (RUSD) to facilitate the Inland Code Consortium inlandcode.weebly.comdedicated to promoting computer science education in schools and districts. Currently, 13 districts fromRiverside County participate in the consortium: Beaumont, Corona-Norco, Jurupa, Lake Elsinore, Menifee, Moreno Valley, Perris Union, RCOE, Riverside, Romoland, San Jacinto, Temecula, Val Verde. — RCOE is a Regional Partner with Code.org, an international non-profit that advocates for computer science education in K-12 and preparation of teachers to teach computer science. Currently, 14 districts from Riverside County participate in the Code.org professional development facilitated by RCOE: Beaumont, Corona- Norco, Desert Sands, Hemet, Lake Elsinore, Moreno Valley, Murrieta, Nuview, Palo Verde, Perris Union, RCOE, Riverside, San Jacinto, Temecula — AP Computer Science courses are offered in one or more high schools in the following 17 Riverside County districts: Alvord, Banning, Beaumont, Coachella Valley,
