EDITORIAL

Welcome to the 2016 edition of the United Counties League Review. It is our 33 rd seasonal review and the fifth to appear in electronic form.

The 2015-16 campaign was a bitter sweet one in many respects. As always, the season will be remembered with fondness by those clubs which enjoyed on field success, but the backdrop to our football has been the struggles experienced by many clubs in these days of dwindling committees and often a lack of player commitment. The problems have been heightened by the disappearance of Northampton Spencer from our competition after 48 years. With many of the club’s senior members wishing to take a break after the best part of a lifetime running the Millers, the search for younger replacements proved unsuccessful and the inevitable outcome was closure for a club which for most of the last half century has been number two only to the Cobblers in the town. Spencer have faced extra burdens in comparison with many clubs, notably the regular floods which have engulfed the Kingsthorpe Mill ground, and more recently the problem of vandalism at a secluded location, but in some respects they are the tip of the iceberg, as manpower issues affect all clubs. Further sad news to report was the start or mid-season departures of no fewer than seven teams which held membership at the 2015 Annual General Meeting. The Potton second string failed to see it through pre-season and were followed early in the campaign by Huntingdon while four of the summer recruits to Under 21 football, Daventry, Stamford, Wellingborough and Bedford, joined the casualty list. Completing the early exits were St Neots Saints in Division One. One happy departure to report was that of AFC Kempston Rovers. After 63 years in membership of the league they go on to higher things in the form of promotion to the Southern League Central Division. That lengthy membership of our competition has seen as many downs as ups, but in recent seasons the Walnut Boys have made fast progress off the field, with facility improvements and the development of income streams to support a move into higher football. Good luck to them in the future, may they continue to thrive! The Walnut Boys were one of the 2015-16 campaign’s success stories, as were Leicester Nirvana who matched them stride for stride in the Premier title race and ON Chenecks who won promotion to the top flight for the first time. The team of the year though was Peterborough Sports who combined a title winning league campaign with a successful pursuit of silverware on three cup fronts. Few would bet against them making a big impact on their top flight bow in 2016-17! The league welcomes three new first teams in Division One. Daventry Town return after six years playing at higher levels. They have enjoyed some success but have found the costs of playing in a far flung league prohibitive and opted to regroup in a more local competition. We welcome two clubs on the up, promoted from step 7. Melton Town join us from the Leicestershire Senior League and Whittlesey Athletic from the Peterborough League. Both clubs have been consistent performers in their previous competitions and both will be playing on relatively new grounds. Some of our recent arrivals have been quick to enjoy success and these newcomers will no doubt be hoping to enhance their reputations.

After a recent decline in numbers reserve football seems to be on the way back with eighteen clubs starting the new season. A shortage of numbers has seen the Under 21 Division shelved for 2016-17.

We’ll be back in the summer of 2017 to review the events of the 2016-17 campaign. Enjoy your football and support your local clubs.

LEAGUE REVIEW

PREMIER DIVISION: WALNUT BOYS PIP NIRVANA ON LAST DAY

One of the most exciting Premier Division championship races ever went the way of AFC Kempston who claimed the title by a margin of just two goals over Leicester Nirvana who finished as runners up for a second season in succession. The Walnut Boys set a record by going through their first 32 matches unbeaten until they suffered their only league reverse at Eynesbury on Easter Saturday. Eleven of those matches had been drawn though and those points lost meant they could never shake off the free scoring Nirvana outfit which spent the bulk of the season at the head of the table.

A key encounter in the title race saw ten men Kempston beat Nirvana 2-0 at Hillgrounds on 13 th February, goals from Sam Johnson and Josh Winters giving the Walnut Boys a vital three points.

Nirvana suffered home defeats against Wisbech and Sleaford in the next few weeks but Kempston’s Easter loss left the contest nicely balanced as the season moved into April, Nirvana a point clear from a game more.

Kempston dropped points in draws with Holbeach and Deeping but Nirvana did likewise at home to Northampton Spencer and with four games each to play the duo were level on points with Nirvana two goals better off. Two more wins each in the next week saw the sides level on goal difference with Nirvana’s advantage down to goals scored, but on 26 th April Nirvana plundered seven goals against Holbeach while the Walnut Boys could manage just three at home to Eynesbury. Going into the final day Kempston needed to better Nirvana’s result by a five goal margin to turn the tables and they duly completed the task with a 7-0 demolition of Boston Town while Nirvana were edging Eynesbury 2-1 at Hall Road. Newport Pagnell finished a distant third, fourteen points behind the top two, with Holbeach fourth, a further 13 points back. The Tigers had seemed contenders for much of the season but their prospects were ruined by a fixture backlog which saw them suffer seven successive defeats in April. Cogenhoe finished strongly to claim fifth place ahead of Eynesbury and Sleaford who both exceeded expectations finishing 6 th and 7 th respectively. Also outperforming expectations were Harborough who finished in the top half of the top flight for the first time, and Rothwell Corinthians who finished 14 th on their return to the Premier Division. Huntingdon hit the bottom of the table in their second game and never looked like escaping the basement. They lost their first eleven games before a shock 1-0 success at Wisbech on 6 th October. Eight days later they picked up their only home win by a single goal against Wellingborough, but thereafter their only reward came from home draws with Harrowby in February and Eynesbury in April. The second relegation place turned into a three team contest between Sileby, Wellingborough and Oadby. Eight defeats in their last ten matches saw the Poachers slide into the bottom two, six points adrift of the Doughboys who lost just four of their last eleven games. Sileby finished level on points with Wellingborough despite incurring a six point deduction for playing a player under suspension. Rangers had ended the season as one of the division’s form teams after collecting a 19 point haul from their final nine matches. Other clubs did not fulfil their potential with anticipated title challenges never materialising from Wisbech and Yaxley.

DIVISION ONE: SPORTS DOMINATE THE DIVISION

The Division One season was dominated by Peterborough Sports who finished the campaign a massive 21 points clear of runners up ON Chenecks.

Jimmy Dean had assembled a formidable array of attacking talent at Lincoln Road and an opening match 9-0 rout of Irchester put down a marker for the season. It was October before Sports hit top slot though as another well fancied side Stewarts & Lloyds held pole position through most of September. Sports went top with another 9-0 win at Blackstones on 7 th October and were never headed thereafter. They extended their winning start to 21 games by the end of January, by which time their advantage at the top stood at 15 points. Hopes of a perfect Sports season were wrecked by a 3-0 defeat at Long Buckby on 13 th February and they were beaten in their next game at Stewarts & Lloyds as well. In reality the chasing pack were too far behind to mount a challenge and Sports duly won twelve of their last thirteen games. The title was clinched with a 1-0 home win over Thrapston on Easter Monday, Avelino Vieira scoring the title winning goal. The second promotion place came down to a two horse race between much changed Stewarts & Lloyds who included a number of players with Premier Division backgrounds and an ON Chenecks squad which had been playing together for a few years. Meetings between the pair ultimately proved crucial with a pair of 2-1 Chenecks wins at home in December and away in February accounting for the six point gap between the pair in the final table. Chenecks clinched second slot in their penultimate game, winning 5-0 at Burton Park with a Ben Lewington hat trick, Adam Spalding effort and Joe Lewington spot kick. Graham Cottle’s men lost just once in their last fourteen games and won their last six without conceding a goal.

The Foundrymen were left to rue late season points dropped against Thrapston, Oakham and Olney as they came up short in the final analysis.

Below the top three there was little between a raft of clubs with Olney pipping Bourne to fourth, Long Buckby and Potton also having good seasons without the consistency required to make serious challenges for a place in the top flight. In the lower reaches Burton Park finished well adrift after failing to win in their first nineteen games. A shock victory at Potton on the Saturday before Christmas broke their duck but they had to wait until April to add to their wins tally with home victories over Bugbrooke and Irchester.

The young St Neots Saints side looked set for another season of struggle, and they had just a single win to their name in sixteen matches when they submitted their resignation in late November.

A seventeen match sequence without victory condemned Bugbrooke to a second bottom finish, seven points adrift of Buckingham who failed to escape the bottom three from December onwards.

RESERVE DIVISION: ABBOTT STEERS LANKIES TO FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP

The Reserve Division proved the most competitive of the league’s four sections during 2015-16 and it was Rushden & Higham who found the necessary consistency to take the honours in a league in which any team seemed capable of beating any other.

New Lankies boss Wayne Abbott assembled a squad blending youth and experience and with a settled group of players the crown found its way to Hayden Road with eight points to spare.

10

Rushden & Higham started the season with a six match unbeaten run while other fast starters were previous season’s strugglers Irchester who won their first three games and Whitworth who were also unbeaten in six to start the campaign.

Teams expected to do well included ON Chenecks, Olney and Raunds but all made slow starts. By the turn of the year though Chenecks and the Nurserymen were well in contention alongside Rushden & Higham.

2016 brought a change in fortunes for some of the title aspirants though. Chenecks lost their first four matches of the year while Olney picked up just a single point from the first nine available in the new year.

By contrast the Lankies kept winning but distractions in cup competitions saw them just a few points clear of their rivals, albeit with an increasing number of matches in hand.

Rushden & Higham’s eight match winning run ended in a goalless draw at Raunds on 5 th March, but as the season moved towards a close they maintained their long unbeaten run before clinching the title with a 2-0 success at Cogenhoe on 16 th April, Dan Turiccki and Ryan Kalla on the scoresheet. By season’s end their unbeaten run stood at 17 games, twelve of them victories.

Raunds came through the pack to take second place, reeling off eight successive wins in a fifteen match unbeaten run to finish six points clear of Olney who pipped Chenecks to third place on goal difference.

The league was close at the bottom end too with the bottom three separated on goal difference alone. Whitworth finished in the basement position behind Thrapston and Bugbrooke while Rothwell Corinthians pulled clear after just one reverse in their last six outings.

UNDER 21 DIVISION: FAST FINISHING POPPIES ELITE TAKE THE TITLE

The league’s second season of Under 21 Division football proved a difficult one. The campaign kicked off with sixteen teams and the original plan was for clubs to meet just the once with a possible expansion of games if the weather was kind.

The membership was soon to reduce though with Daventry and Stamford dropping out in September followed by Wellingborough in October. Early in the new year Bedford called it a day due to team raising problems.

This quartet had struggled in a division which saw a gulf in standard between the strongest and weakest teams, and through the season there were a number of high scoring games reflecting the strength and weakness of various clubs. Reigning champions Milton Keynes College Elite made a strong start in the defence of their crown, losing just once before the turn of the year, while Kettering Elite, runners-up in the inaugural season, took time to find their stride, picking up just two points from their first three games.

Two other second season clubs who had good first campaigns, AFC Kempston and Histon, both started well while Football CV Reds were the most improved second season side, winning six of their first seven matches.

Kettering Development looked the strongest of the new teams in the first half of the season, but slipped down the table as the season progressed.

Histon’s prospects were hit by the promotion of several of their starting squad to Southern League duties, and as the season progressed the title race developed into a four team contest.

Kempston suffered heavy defeats against Histon and Kettering Elite but the new year saw them come into their own, putting together an 11 match winning run which left them on the verge of the title. A March goal drought saw Football CV Reds fail to score in three games as they slipped out of contention while a nine week lay off all but wrecked MK College Elite’s chances of retaining the title. 11

Kettering Elite though, were proving a model of consistency after their indifferent start. County cup progress left them with ground to make up though and when they travelled to runaway leaders AFC Kempston on 23 rd April they trailed the Walnut Boys by thirteen points with five matches in hand. A win would have won the championship for Kempston but the Poppies shaded a feisty encounter 3-2 and went on to win their games in hand to clinch the crown with a 4-0 victory at MK College Elite on 14 th May, Niall Duffy scoring three and Jonny Joyce one. At the other end of the division Yaxley deserve credit for completing their fixtures despite some huge reverses. They lost all 22 matches, conceding 161 goals, but were unlucky to have wins over Wellingborough and Bedford expunged after their victims dropped out of the league.
