Promoting Welding in the World for both acade- mic and industrial end users is key to furthe-

ring development of the IIW scientific journal. In 2017, nearly 400 papers (1 third of recommended papers and 2 thirds of open submission papers) were submitted and six issues were published including 120 papers and over 1,200 pages of fun- damental and applied re- search associated with ma- terials joining. About 20% of the open submission papers were forwarded into the peer review system.

All the indicators of the journal’s quality and performance continued to increase significant- ly in 2017 as illustrated. WIW is ranked 22/131 in the Materials Science subject Metals and Alloys category. Last year’s rank was 34/128. The 2017

Science Citation Index (SCI) Impact Factor (re- leased in June 2018) saw an increase from 0.948 in 2016 to 1.206 in 2017. The journal’s five-year Im- pact Factor also increased from 1.135 in 2016 to 1.41 expected in 2017.

The tremendous growth in the number of papers submitted to Welding in the World over the last three years has required tremendous effort by both the peer review panel and production staff. The Editors are planning major changes to the

peer review system in 2018 that will further ex- pand the Editorial Board to include more subject area experts in key areas. Through these efforts we look forward to the continued growth and re- cognition of our journal.
