IIW 2017 Annual Report

Prof. Shuiji Aihara , President of Japan Institute of Welding, presented the award to Prof. Sindo Kou (USA) whose research accomplishments have focused on the understanding and control of cracking, segregation and transport phenomena during solidification in welding, casting and crys- tal growth. He joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Wis- consin-Madison in 1983 to become Professor in 1985 and Department Chair 2000-2004 and has authored two textbooks and received numerous honours and awards for his work. EVGENY PATON PRIZE Sponsored by the National Welding Committee of the Ukraine and the E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute.

Prof. Dr-Ing. Thomas Böllinghaus , one of the three Editors of the journal, presented the award. Prof. Heidi Cramer, Branch Manager of GSI SLV Munich, Germany, received the award on behalf of the authors, Dr Dominique Thierry, Dr Flavien Vucko, Dr Gerald Luckeneder, Mr Bastien Weber, Mr Laurence Dosdat, Mr Thomas Bschorr and Dr-Ing. Klemens Rother for their paper: ‘Fatigue Behavior for Spot Welded Joints in Air and Under Corrosive Environments Part I: Materials, Speci- men and Test Results in Air’. HENRY GRANJON PRIZE Sponsored by the Insti- tut de Soudure (France). Rewards a young professional or student for an outstanding paper devoted to research into wel- ding and related technologies. Dr Prabu Manoharan , representing the French Welding Institute, this year presented prizes in two categories. CATEGORY B - Materials Behaviour and Welda-

bility, won by Dr Tyler Bor- chers (USA) for his paper ‘Exacerbated Stress Corro- sion Cracking in Arc Welds of High-Strength Aluminum Al- loys’. CATEGORY C – Design and

Prof. Yoshinori Hirata (Japan) was presented the award by Dr Volodymyr Korzhyk representing the E.O. Paton Institute. Hirata’s dedication to the un- derstanding of welding phenomena associated with the gas shielded arc welding process has re- sulted in world-leading improvements in welding quality and productivity. His pioneering research on arc plasma, metal transfer and weld pool phe- nomena has significantly impacted the develop- ment of practical arc welding processes. HALIL KAYA GEDIK AWARD Sponsored by the Turkish Delegation.

Structural Integrity, won by Dr Eeva Mikko- la (Finland) for her paper ‘Allowable Stresses in High-Frequency Mechanical Impact (HF- MI)-Treated Joints Subjected to Variable Ampli- tude Loading’. THOMAS MEDAL Sponsored by the American Wel- ding Society (AWS).

Recognises a scientist or en- gineer’s significant contributions to the advancement welding science and technology. Mrs Hülya Gedik-Sadiklar , Chair of the Board of Gedik Holding,

and President of GEV - Gedik Education and Social Benefits Foundation made the presentation to Ms Teresa Melfi (USA). Melfi is an engineer, resear- cher and mentor, and is a Technical Fellow with The Lincoln Electric Company. She supports the global welding community through involvement in standards bodies, joint industry and academic projects, peer review and technical seminars. 2016 WELDING IN THE WORLD BEST PAPER AWARD Sponsored by the IIW. A research, industrial or academic best paper se- lected from amongst all papers published in six issues of the Welding in the World journal in the calendar year prior to the award.

Mr Mathias Lundin (Sweden), who has been ac- tive in IIW welding standardisation activities since the mid-1990s, received the medal from Mr John Bray, President of AWS. Lundin has served as Chair of the IIW Working Group Standardisation since 2012 and as Vice-Chair of IIW Select Com- mittee Quality Management in Welding and Allied Processes since 2010. For over 15 years, Lundin has been Swedish delegate to IIW C-VI Terminolo- gy. Previously, he served as Secretary to both ISO and CEN technical committees on welding and al- lied processes, ISO/TC 44/SC 3 and CEN/TC 121/ WG 3 Welding Consumables.
