Her measured approach could be due to the fact that Kate’s first steps into the wonderful world of sound began with a love of musicals: “Growing up in that era of High School Musical – that was definitely what got me started in music,” she explains. Now she’s a megafan of Broadway productions, as well as some golden classics:

“John Mellencamp – my dad would always listen to him,” she laughs. Leersen is a musician herself, performing on guitar with her brother on caj ó n (a percussive box the player sits on and thumps) in a duo aptly named Kinsfolk Road. “We’ve been playing together for… well, like our whole childhood,” she laughs, “but in public, probably only about two years.” Playing live, Kate gets to indulge her love of all kinds of music, because their setlists are so varied; she says that if a song has good bones, “it doesn’t matter how you play it – it’s always going to sound good.” (Check out the pair's cover of Linkin Park’s Numb – performed at the siblings' local pub – on YouTube.) Mildura store itself has a pronounced country fanbase, with Luke Combs and Keith Urban getting regular look-ins by clientele, as well as one title which is a 'Best Of 2019' record for Kate: The Teskey Brothers’ Run Home Slow . “I just saw them in Adelaide – they were amazing,” she says of the ARIA-winning four-piece, adding that she travelled the 400+ kilometres just to attend the show. The other stand-out of last year for her was the incredible Stranger Things 3 soundtrack. “It was very nostalgic and captured the whole vibe of the show,” she says. “I loved it so much I bought it on vinyl!”
