National Insurance Number

NATIONAL INSURANCE NUMBER

WHAT IS A NATIONAL INSURANCE NUMBER? + If you have the right to work or study in the UK, you will get issued or apply to be issued with a National Insurance number. Your National Insurance number is your own personal account number. The number makes sure that the National Insurance contributions and tax you pay are properly recorded on your account. It also acts as a reference number for the whole social security system. It is made up of letters and numbers (e.g. QQ 12 34 56 A). This number does not change even if you go abroad, marry, register as a civil partner, change your name etc. + If you are employed in the UK, you will need to pay Class 1 National Insurance Contributions with your tax. This applies from age sixteen to state pension age, which can be between 61 and 68 depending on when someone was born and whether they are male or female, although you can continue to work past this age. WHY DO I NEED ONE? + Organisations such as HM Revenue and Customs, your employer, the department for work and pensions, your local council and your bank may need to know your National Insurance Number. + National Insurance goes towards state benefits such as state pensions, jobseeker’s allowance, employment and support allowance, maternity allowance and bereavement benefits. + All UK citizens have to pay National Insurance contributions by law if they are employed or self-employed. HOW DO I GET IT? + If you have not been given your National Insurance number or you are a non-British citizen with permission to work in the UK, call Jobcentre Plus 0800 141 2075 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm). + They may ask you to go to an ‘ Evidence of Identity’ interview to confirm your identity where you will be asked about your circumstances and why you need a National Insurance number. You will be asked to bring documents to prove your identity, such as your passport/identity card, residence permit, birth/adoption certificate. + If you already have a National Insurance number and have lost it, you should fill out form CA5403 or contact the helpline above. + UK Citizens are issued with a National Insurance number when they turn sixteen + To find out how much you have paid, you can apply to HM Revenue and Customs to check your National Insurance record.
