VOLUME 29 ISSUE 10 HOUSE YOUR

HOW TO LIGHT THE INTERIOR OF YOUR HOME How a room is lit can completely transform the space. Soft lighting is relaxing or even romantic. Brighter lighting can add drama or highlight a specific work area. If you want a room to have a range of moods and functions, try layering various lighting styles. Add both table and floor lamps to illuminate different levels. Lamps also offer an opportunity to add sculptural shapes or interesting patterns to a room. And consider the scale of overhead lights as they tend to draw the eye and should be both beautiful and practical. As for pot lights, don’t treat them as your primary source of light or you may end up with a space that looks more like an airstrip than a stylish bedroom or living room. Pot lights should be used to create ambient lighting and aremost effective when placed on a dimmer switch. Lastly, don’t be afraid to mix and match lighting materials and even styles. Selecting lighting should be fun – not formulaic.
