WELCOME Light on surprises, heavy on content, Bethesda dominating the best press conferences, and Cyberpunk 2077 is probably the most concise summary I could apply to E3 2018. Judging an E3 long after the doors have closed is always subjective: some you forget in due course while others stick in the memory like clag. I’d probably put this one somewhere in the middle. E3 is in transition from becoming a pure industry-based show to a community event, and while this is only the second year that it’s been open to the public, the show has made some big steps in the right direction. From a software perspective, the opportunities to get hands-on with an extensive list of games – some new, and some we played last year – felt limitless. There were clear indications that we’re not far away from new hardware, with Microsoft revealing it is ‘deep’ into development of its next console – in whatever form that may be – and with the acquisition of five new studios, it’s clear the company is filling its war chest for its next generation war with Sony. In the more immediate future though, gamers have every reason to be excited. If the last few run-ups to Christmas and NewYear have been a little thin on the ground with heavyweight contenders, many of the releases coming in late 2018/early 2019 are absolute knockouts. Hold on tight – this is going to be some ride! Paul Jones, Editor-in-Chief
