Union Station is one of Washington DC’s most popular tourist sites. This aesthetically-pleasing train station not only hosts daily trains and buses but holds over 100 unique shops and restaurants, along with a movie theater, making for a great destination stop for people visiting or residing in the DC area. Washington Monument www.nps.gov/wamo/index.htm The Washington Monument can be seen from the National Mall and stands in honor of the first president, George Washington. It stands at 555 feet tall, allowing visitors to see views 30 miles away once at the top. No other building in DC is allowed to be taller than the Washington Monument. The U.S. Capitol www.visitthecapitol.gov The United States Capitol is the original meeting place of the nation’s legislature and is a symbol of the American people and their government. Visiting the U.S. Capitol is an office building but is also a popular tourist destination for people visiting the DC area. The U.S. Capitol holds collections of important American art and architectural achievements. Library of Congress www.loc.gov Founded in 1800, the Library of Congress is the oldest federal cultural institution in the nation, is known for its research library that services the U.S. Congress and national library. This library houses over 167 million historic items across 838 miles of bookshelves. Visitors are able to tour the Supreme Court and attend lectures to learn about the court and history of the building. Monday–Wednesday during the months of October–April, people who arrive early can gain a spot to watch a case being argued free of charge. Georgetown and the Waterfront www.nps.gov/places/georgetown-waterfront-park.htm This is very well known area, housing some of the most expensive real estate in DC, people venture to Georgetown to see the aesthetically pleasing area. Make the most out the location by paddling the Potomac, walk by The Washington Harbour, bike along the river, or eat at one of the many restaurants found in Georgetown. National Cathedral https://cathedral.org Known for its Gothic-style Cathedral is an architectural work of art and a must see building in DC. The cathedral has more than 200 strained-glass windows, 200 gargoyles and grotesques, along with wood carvings, mosaics and artistic metal work.
