Exhibitions

Be Who You are and Keep to it - a retrospective exhibition by Karel Zelenko 14 Jun - 25 Sep, International Centre of Graphic Arts The exhibition features more than 100 art prints as well as paintings, illustrations and ceramics by the notable Slovenian artist Karel Zelenko. Born in 1925, Zelenko is one of the last living artists of his generation, who has been working as a freelance artist consistently throughout his lifetime. His artistic vision has never conformed to current events and changes in art at home or abroad, remaining faithful to his authentic artistic themes and visual language to this very day. He remains surrounded by his world of figure and landscape, which he still uses to fulfil his artistic mission today. Open: 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays Save the Bees 21 May - 25 Sep, Ljubljana Castle The Save the Bees exhibition explores the rich tradition of beekeeping in Slovenian-inhabited lands and examines the importance of bees for ensuring the Earth’s biodiversity. exhibition presents beekeeping as a traditional activity related in many ways to the Slovenian way of life. Slovenian beekeepers are credited with domesticating the indigenous Carniolan honey bee, which is now the second most widespread bee subspecies in the world. Bee products such as honey, beeswax, royal jelly, bee pollen, propolis, and bee venom play an important role in traditional Slovenian cuisine and handicrafts, but they are also used in modern medicine. In the process of conserving bees, Slovenia, due to its Held during Ljubljana’s year as the European Green Capital, the

biodiversity and high level of public awareness of the issue, continues to be a ‘green oasis’ for bees and is internationally renowned as a country of excellent beekeepers. The exhibition also presents Slovenia’s rich cultural and artistic heritage related to beekeeping. Open: 9:00-20:00 daily. A beer lover’s

Ljubljana has a very long tradition of brewing, proof of which are 3,900-year-old beer barrels excavated at the Ljubljana Marshes. The earliest known brewery in Ljubljana dates back at least to 1592, and by 1796, the city had six breweries. Recent years have seen a rapid growth in the popularity of craft beers made by different microbreweries in Ljubljana and its surrounding area. During the tour, you will visit five different drink outlets, including a pub, where you will taste eight different beers made by five different breweries, two based in Ljubljana and three in other parts of the Central Slovenia region. You will also visit the Brewery Museum, set up by the Pivovarna Union brewery, where the popular Union beer has been brewed since 1864, and round off your experience at the Pivnica Union pub.
