DID YOU KNOW? The family of Donald and Darlene Shiley made the largest donation in its long history of phi• lanthropy in 2002, a $10 million naming gift for what will be known as the Donald P. Shiley Cen• ter for Science and Technology. Construction for the 150,000-square foot Center began in 2001. The new Center, which opened this Fall, con– tains 73 state-of-the-art laboratory facilities for chemistry, biology, marine science and environ– mental studies, biochemistry, physics and re– lated sciences. Additionally, the building will include aquari• ums, an astronomy deck, an aviary, a green– house, and conference areas to accommodate gatherings of science-related groups and orga– nizations.
ATHLETICS The University of San Diego is a member of the West Coast Conference for nearly all sports and competes in 16 intercollegiate sports on the NCAA Division I level. The football team is in its tenth season in the Pioneer Football League . Women's sports include: basketball, cross country, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming, ten– nis and volleyball. Men's sports include: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, football, rowing, soccer and tennis. Since 1990 USD teams have made 38 NCAA post-season appearances; garnered 35 All-America selections; had 32 Conference Coaches of the Year; 25 Conference Players of the Year; 14 Conference Freshmen of the Year; won 13 conference championships; and 4 wee Scholar Athletes of the Year. Last year saw the men's basketball program win their first WCC Basketball Tournament Championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in sixteen years.
