CANADIAN FINALS RODEO REED DEER, ALBERTA

Hanchey nabs another CPRA title

In one of the most dramatic comeback wins at the Canadian Finals Rodeo, Shane Hanchey, the 2013 PRCA Tie-down Roping World Champion, overcame a slow start and put together back-to-back go-round wins to close out the week and claim his fourth Canadian Professional Rodeo Association title and second in a row in Red Deer, Alberta, Nov. 3. “It feels really good,” Hanchey told the CPRA in a press release. “The way it started I didn’t know if I’d be in this position. But I follow the motto, ‘Don’t let the highs get too high or the lows too low,’ and you can never count yourself out in this sport.” The 11-year pro finished out of the money in the first two rounds of the CFR, then managed modest fourth and fifth-place finishes in the middle of the week before mounting his late charge. His final two times – 7.3 seconds and 7.2 seconds – carried him to the aggregate title and allowed the Sulphur, La., roper to catch

CINCH WORLD’S TOUGHEST RODEO INDIANAPOLIS Young permit-holding bull rider wins big in Indy Permit holder Creek Young has set several goals for the 2020 That win in Indianapolis with all those kids from FFA there, the crowd was one of the best crowds I’d ridden in front of and one of the biggest.”

season. If he keeps riding bulls the way he did in Indianapolis at the CinchWorld’s Toughest Rodeo he’ll be on his way to hitting those goals. Young won the rodeo with an 87-point ride onThree Hills Rodeo’s Dirt Road, Oct. 31. That score was tops for the three-day rodeo that ended Nov. 1. He earned $2,891 for that ride and another $1,000 for his 87-point ride onThree Hills Rodeo’s Brain Games for the bonus round second performance. Young, who turned 19 Nov. 15, is in third place in the 2020 PRCA | RAMPermit Standings. He’s shooting for the top spot in those standings, a place at the permit challenge in Las Vegas in 2020 and a record that was just broken. “It felt really good (to get that win), first one this season,” said Young, who is planning on buying his PRCA card for the 2021 season. “I’d only won one other ProRodeo before that, but it was a smaller one.

Young is gunning for the permit holder record for most money won in a single event in one year (including ground money) set at $72,543 by bull rider Parker McCown during the 2019 season. “I’m going to try and go out and give it my best shot,” Young said. “Parker McCown set the record last year for the permits, and I’m going to try and beat that record.” Young travels mostly with ProRodeo bull rider Denton Fugate and Quentin Vaught and with permit holder Colton Byram. Traveling with Fugate and Vaught puts Young around some experienced cowboys. “Sometimes I can get discouraged, but they wouldn’t keep me in the car if they didn’t believe in me,” Young said. “If they believe in me to go with them, then I reckon I’m good enough.” – PRCA Staff
