want. RCACs can be a cost- effective alternative to home-based care. Each individual community decides how to package and price services and programs. Some commu- nities will offer a single monthly fee, including meals, care and services. Others will divide the fee into a base rate and ser- vice packages. Others will offer an Ă  la carte option where fees are charged based on services used. Medicare does not cover services in an RCAC. Payments may come from a variety of sources including, but not limited to, personal resources (savings, pen- sions, Social Security), State and federal fund- ing, as well as veterans care benefits. RCACs offer each per- son service choices to meet his or her personal, social, spiritual and health care needs. For R ESIDENTIAL C ARE A PARTMENT C OMPLExES

One benefit of Residential Care Apartment Complexes (RCACs) is that they offer each resident ser- vices unique to his or her needs. As each resident’s need for care changes or increases, services can be added, removed or modi- fied accordingly. Another benefit of RCACs is the availability of social and leisure activities to choose from. Some peo- ple move to an RCAC because they are socially isolated and desire com- panionship and interaction. Others move because they want to remain indepen- dent while having reassur- ance that care is available, if ever needed. Staff provides programs and activities based on interests of the residents, taking into account the physical and cognitive abil- ities of the participants. Many RCACs offer card clubs, shopping trips, out- ings to local points of inter- est, book discussions, live entertainment, cultural and educational activities, reli- gious programming, exer- cise and wellness groups, and more. Residents can be as active and engaged in the community as they
