1. There could be two instances when EMS would not attempt resuscitation of a lifeless patient: potential crime scene, or a patient found when the time down is unknown. In either event, no attempt at resuscitation will be made if the patient exhibits any of the following: a. Decapitation or brain matter showing b. Exsanguination c. Lividity d. Any sign of decomposition

2. If no resuscitation is to be attempted, no EMS personnel will approach the body; the scene will be left with the police department

3. If there is any doubt as to the viability of the patient, an assessment will be conducted by as few personnel as possible until a determination of viability can be made.

4. If resuscitation is in progress prior to arrival of the EMS unit, resuscitation will continue unless the patient meets any of the following: a. Decapitation or brain matter showing b. Exsanguination c. Lividity d. Any sign of decomposition e. DNR paperwork is presented f. Patient is unresponsive to resuscitative efforts g. Termination of resuscitation and time of pronouncement is provided by the attending TMH emergency physician
