The emerging eye of a hurricane takes on its well-known spiral shape in this image taken from the ISS. Studying weather from space gives scientists a new way to look at how weather moves on Earth.

Even oceanographers can learn in space. By looking down from the space station, they can see huge areas of the ocean. Special cameras can record the growth of algae in the water, or can see how currents move. Engineers, of course, find lots to do in space. They help operate and maintain the ISS, while also trying out new gear to see how it works in space. The lessons they take back to Earth will help make future missions better and safer. Being an astronaut certainly includes the excitement of launch and the wonder of seeing Earth from space. But it also means using scientific knowledge to help everyone.
