Fabian Bösch präsentiert sein Können auf der ganzen Welt, kehrt aber immer wieder gerne nach Engelberg zurück. Fabian Bösch shows off his skills all over the world, but he’s always glad to come home to Engelberg.

With his daring leaps and stunts that bear inscrutable names like “triple cork 1620 safety grab”, Engelberg native Fabian Bösch is a member of the global freeskiing elite. Aged just 19, he has already become slopestyle world champion and he won the Big Air competition at this year’s prestigious X Games sports event. Fabian Bösch ’s skiing career got of f to an incredible star t. From an early age he came to dominate the regiona l A lpine racing scene and soon became a top player nationa lly and even internationa lly. Then, aged just 13, Fabian

That ’s why the Olym- pics are a lso impor tant for me as an ath lete.” Freeskiers are cool dudes who love show- ing of f their tricks on socia l media and seem to enjoy ever y minute of it, but Fabian empha- sises that the spor t a lso takes lots of hard work. Before the spor t became an Olympic disci- pline in 2014 , f reeskiers didn’ t pay that much at tention to streng th training. “That ’s a ll changed now,” says Fabian. own tricks and your own way of riding. You need to do something dif ferent to what your riva ls are doing.” Fabian approaches each new jump step by step until he knows exac tly what he’s doing and is able to present the resu lts in competition. Genera lly, he doesn’ t experi- ence any fear, but, he laughs, there are mo- ments when he bot tles out: “L ike when I’m spending the day in powder snow with some guys f rom Engelberg and I see them jumping over massive clif fs.” A lthough Fabian loves to travel, he is a lways happy to come back to his f riends and family in Engelberg: “I love how being here is such a change f rom my ever yday life.” In summer, Fabian of ten hikes, cycles, or camps in the woods. In winter, he enjoys the deep powder snow with f riends – and, of course, he can’ t resist a few wild jumps on the trampoline ever y now and again. “You can see the progress that has been made in the spor t.” Some of the advances are tremendous, and Fabian has to work hard to keep up: “You have to develop your

zooming down a set course must have been pret ty boring for him. He had a lways loved trampolining, and since he cou ldn’ t imagine not doing a spor t he switched f rom A lpine skiing to f reeskiing. It was an astonishing achievement that in such a shor t time he went f rom being a f reeskiing beginner to being ac- cepted into prestigious spor t school Spor tmit- telschu le Engelberg. “My success was prob- ably largely down to my trampolining skills. I a lso a lready had plenty of skiing experience,” Fabian says. He quick ly proved that he had a great dea l of ta lent and that the school had been right to accept him, even though in the end he didn’ t stay there long. At just 17, Fabian was crowned slopestyle world champion; at 18 he took f irst place in the Big Air categor y at the prestigious X Games in Aspen. When asked about his plans for the f uture, he simply ex- presses the hope that that he can achieve simi- lar resu lts this season. In the medium term, he has his sights set on the 2018 Olympic Games
