Head Coach Gary Becker

Gary Becker has been in- volved in collegiate swimming since 1970. During those twenty years, he has coached men's and women's swimming at all three divisions of the NCAA. Over the years, Gary's phi- losophy has been one of helping swimmers to improve- both in and out of thewater. He feels that athletics is a proving ground for physical challenges, as well as personal, psychological, and social challenges. In the past, Gary Becker has coached novice, high school, USS, National and All-American swimmers. In addi- tion to coaching the women's team at USO, Gary runs a highly respected summer competitive swim camp and is the intra- mural director at the school. Gary is married and has two children one boy and one girt. He has been a coach for over twenty-one seasons. Prior to his coaching career, Gary was an outstanding high school and collegiate swimmer and water polo player. Assistant Coach Steve Tucker Assistant Coach Steve Tucker begins his third year as an assistant to Head Coach Gary Becker. Once again, he will assist Coach Becker with the swimmers. A 1971 graduate of Virginia Tech with a Master's Degree from San Diego State, Steve has enjoyed much success coaching at the youth, high school and collegiate levels. Formerly an age group coach at the Heartland Swim Association, Steve has produced several swimmers who have reached the Top 16 nationally. His team won the local Junior Olympics competition six times. He and his wife, Donna, have two children, Ryan and Brenna. They reside in the San Carlos area of San Diego. Assistant Coach Shane Fitzmaurice Assistant Coach Shane Fitzmaurice begins his sec- ond year as an assistant coach with the Toreras. He will have primary responsibility of working with the team's corps of divers. A graduate of San Diego State with a degree in English Literature, the New York native has been diving competitively for twenty years. He has extensive coaching experience at sports camps, high schools and colleges. His philosophy is to let his charges "work hard but have fun". He is single and lives in the Tierrasanta section of San Diego. Swim Season Outlook The University of San Diego Women's Swim Team is in its twelfth year of competition, the last seven as members of NCAA Division I. During these twelve years, Head Coach Gary Becker has produced four Division II All-Americans. Without a doubt, the swim program at USO stresses quality as well as competitiveness. The 1990-91 edition of the Toreras will, for the most part, be a young and highly talented squad. The team will be composed of 15 swimmers and three divers. Of the 18 members of the team, only one is a senior and two are juniors. The remaining swimmers are either sophomores or fresh- men.

A third freshman, Karen Trollope, will contribute immediately in both backstroke and freestyle events. The diving chore belong to three freshmen . Michele Fallon, who comes to USO from Saudi Arabia, Lisa Leonovicz and Amanda Robinson give the Toreras the strong possibility of points in each meet. The 1990-91 season has the potential to be a banner year for the Toreras. There is sufficient talent to make USO competitive in each meet. The schedule, however, is a strong one. It should provide the challenges necessary to make the Toreras a viable contestant in the world of women's swim- ming. All in all, 90-91 should prove to be exciting and interest- ing for Head Coach Gary Becker and his Toreras.

The Toreras appear to be strongest in backstroke and breaststroke events. The backstrokers are led by sopho- mores Tracie Childs and Jennifer Witt. Junior Mary Bergen, last year's most valuable swimmer, returns to anchor the breaststrokers. With a field of seven swimmers - its largest contingent ever, the Toreras should be strong in the distance events. Leading the way will be sophomore Susan Torrey. Susan is strong in all freestyle events from 200 yards to 1,650 yards. She is also expected to be a factor in the 200 yard butterfly. A pair of freshmen from the state of Minnesota lead the list of newcomers. Tracy Schweiger and Molly McGlennen give the Toreras strength in the breaststroke and freestyle events. They ar expected to be a scoring threat in each meet.
