ArlaMaschinentechnik GmbH, Germany, builds CNC controlled end-working machines for single-sided or double- sided end-working. The company’s machines are based on a solid frame with one or two precise machining units, and include a unique concentric work- holding technology. The Arla end-working machine can be compared to two separate CNC lathes, operated independently for every side of the workpiece. The principal difference is that this end-working concept incorporates a fixed workpiece and revolving tools. All machining units are directly driven by servomotors and are therefore very stiff and designed for high torques. Typical applications include turning, tapping, threading, chamfering, boring, drilling, milling, de-burring, slotting, and other operations where additional slide units are necessary for a multi-axis machining. PE pipes and fittings – breaking records at the new Wembley Stadium George Fischer Sales Limited, UK, has supplied Elgef electrofusion and PE moulded butt fusion fittings for use in London’s new Wembley Stadium. The company’s products are used to convey water to the stadium’s 2,618 toilets – more than any other stadium in the world, according to estimates by operator Wembley National Stadium Ltd. Much of the PE moulded butt fusion pipework was ‘customised’ off-site at George Fischer’s facility in Coventry, UK, which reduced both on-site working and the amount of skilled labour required, shortened the contract time and helped contain costs. George Fischer’s products provided the mechanical engineers who designed the system with a comprehensive range of fittings, tubes and couplings, for manual and automatic valves, from 20mm to 315mm, as well as associated control and measurement systems. The company’s light, PE moulded butt fusion fittings reduced the weight imposed on the stadium’s plant room structure, and will remain stable at very low temperatures while retaining flexibility and chemical resistance. The PE pipe and fittings have high impact strength, and an operating temperature range from -50°C to +60°C. The fittings are designed to enable simple yet perfect joints. Mouth entry zones are designed for easy pipe insertion, with a depth marking, and exact alignment is made easier by 45° divisional markings. To protect the fusion zones on fittings from contamination, fittings are supplied in clear PE bags. George Fischer’s high performance MSA electrofusion jointing system units are lightweight, rugged and easy to use, and feature an aluminium housing with in-built cooling. With an exchangeable memory card, the MSA electrofusion units provide automatic recording data, and feature a fusion programme which means joint integrity is traceable by means of a bar code system.
