Comprehensive range A supplier of machinery and complete lines for producing cables and steel wire ropes, SKET Verseilmaschinenbau GmbH offers a broad range of payoffs and take-ups, stationary, traversing and rotating type depending on the application.

Cable winding Drouaire cable winding machines incorporate modern state-of- the-art technology, using a combi- nation of electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic power. The result is believed to the most rapid and easily operated unit of this kind available. Drouaire machines have been installed all over the world for major cable makers and cable sellers including Nexans, Prysmian, Draka and Silec and the range of production represents wide choice for cable, wire and optical fibre cable producers. The cable winding machines are fitted to wide variety of drums and cables: for small drums (less than 1.4m diameter) pay off, traversing unit and take-up can be an all-in-one machine. These winding equipments are designed for cable sellers and cable users. The same machine will wind onto either a coiler or a drum: selection is easy, quick and secure (CE labelled). For larger, heavier drums (from 1.4m to 3.4m diameter), a gantry type is highly recommended to work more efficiently in all safety conditions. The layering unit should be motorised and controlled by PLC to wind the cable perfectly onto the drum. Control is by touch screen in the language of the user’s choice. The SKET range includes: Stationary payoffs and take-ups for • reels with flange diameters from 160mm and capacities (as used, for instance, in the fine rope and steel cord industries) to 3,000mm flange diameter and 20MT initial weight Traversing payoffs and take-ups for • reels of 1,250mm to 6,000mm flange diameter, as used in many high speed tubular and cage-type stranding machines with and without back-twist. Besides a great number of machines designed for reels of up to 50MT

capacity, SKET has also supplied take-ups capable of accommodating reels of over 200MT. The largest take-up ever made is suitable for reels with a flange diameter of up to 6,000mm and a width of 8,000mm. This take-up, used at Bridon Gelsenkirchen for taking up long heavy steel ropes, has a loading capacity of more than 370MT. Rotating payoffs and take-ups up to 4,000mm flange diameter and reel initial weights of over 100MT. Of open fork-type or frame design, they are employed as payoffs in the rope making industry or as both payoffs and take-ups for use in cable making lines. Stationary and/or movable portal take-ups suited for reels of up to 4,500mm diameter with a capacity of 50MT maximum and used for special applications in cable production. Wire flies off the reel over the flange, which is protected by a steel rim with a bearing at the centre. Additionally, the rim is made to rotate as the wire rubs against it. This action provides the wire with a slip surface that helps to ease the wire from the reel. The wire then passes through the brush bristles, which are sized specifically for the wire being paid off. The brush puts back tension on the wire and prevents run-on when the line stops. The wire is never allowed to loosen up on the reel so loops, cascading wire or other loose wire conditions are prevented. This is one of the few payoff methods that allow continuous operation by attaching the start end of the inactive reel to the foot end of the active reel. Wyrepak’s

Uhing has developed tensioning and clamping systems, U-Clip (for positioning on rotating and non- rotating shafts, such as wind-up and payoff) and Easylock (for rolls, spools and static applications) that are easily operated with one hand and demand no tools. Full specifications and typical appli- cations of both systems are available on the Uhing website.

standard cap and brush works well with solid wire, and up to 7-strand multi-wire, at speeds up to 600 feet per minute. Other models can handle speeds up to 1,200 feet per minute. Faster applications can use the cap and brush in conjunction with cones or domes.
