Reynolds, a PRCA tie-down roper, team roper and steer roper, passed away Nov. 3. He was 76. Reynolds was born in Las Vegas, N.M., BEN C. REYNOLDS Ben was out gathering and working with his father, his idol, Roy Gill, and the men from the bunkhouse. At 17, Ben was named second in command of the ranch under his father. Reynolds graduated from Sheridan (Wyo.) High School in May 1960. He enrolled in the Army and was stationed in Fort LeonardWood in Missouri. Reynolds and Susan Halverson were married, and on July 16, 1977, their daughter Elizabeth was born while Ben was roping at the SheridanWyo Rodeo. In 2014, Reynolds was in the first class of the Wyoming Cowboy Hall of Fame Inductees. Reynolds was proceeded in death by his parents and Tuck Seeley, who was like a son. He is survived by his daughter Elizabeth (Stewart) Kincaid, his longtime companion Sue Goodman, her daughter Crystal (Bart) Taylor; his grandchildren Samantha and Ryan Taylor, John Kincaid; his sisters, Donna (Jim) Lane, Grace (Jim) Lukkes; niece Kris Lukkes; and nephews Jamie Lane, Chuck Lukkes and David Lukkes. Per Reynolds’ request he has been cremated and his ashes will be spread later. Memorials in honor of Ben can be made to the local Relay for Life Cancer events, American Heart Association or the PRCA Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund. JOHN (JACK) MICHAEL PEILA JR. John Michael Peila Jr., 93, a former PRCA bareback rider, bull rider, tie-down roper and steer wrestler, better known as Jack, passed away Sept. 23, five days shy of turning 94. Reynolds Dec. 9, 1942, to Jimbo and Frances Reynolds. The family moved to Parkman, Wyo., in the winter of 1947 to continue work for the Gill Cattle Company of Exeter, Calif. Peila was born Sept. 28, 1924, at the family ranch near Meeker, Colo. His family moved to Lakewood, Colo., where they operated a dairy. In high school, Peila was a three-sport athlete; competing in football, wrestling and track. Peila earned a football scholarship fromColorado State University in Fort Collins and attended college for a year. However, rodeo was his real passion. Peila mainly competed in bareback riding and bull riding. Peila also judged rodeos when he was recuperating from rodeo injuries. Peila joined the Cowboys’ Turtle Association, which became the Rodeo Cowboys Association in 1945 and eventually the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. It was while competing at the Denver Stock Show he met his future wife, Theresa. She was a member of the press for radio station KLZ in Denver. Jack andTheresa were married June 25, 1946, at Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Denver. Peila was preceded in death by his parents, John and Alta; brother and sister-in-law, Joe andMartha; brother,Wendall; sister and brother-in-law, Barbara andNickMassaro; and son-in-law, Daryl Ross. He is survived by his wife, Theresa; sons and daughters-in-lawMike and Sallie Peila, and Bill and Lori Peila; daughters and sons-in-law Susan and Larry Otley, Linda and Derrald Mann, Mary Jo and Lou Davies, Nellie and Scott Franklin, Katie and Keith Baltzor, Margarita and JonWhite, and Toni and Mario Recanzone; daughter, Ann Ross; sister and brother-in-law, Catherine and Ray Tracy; 32 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren. GREG MATHIS Greg Mathis, a prominent St. George (Utah) businessman and the chairman of the Dixie Roundup Rodeo in St. George, Utah, last year, passed away Nov. 8 following an accidental fall while on vacation in Mexico. He was 46.

Mathis’ funeral was scheduled for noon (MT), Nov. 17 at the Cox Auditorium on the Dixie State University campus. Mathis started the St. George building design firmMRWDesign in 1997. He and his brother, Jeff, along with their MRW colleagues, have designed numerous buildings in St. George and throughout the country. Mathis served in numerous leadership roles in the St. George Lions Club and the Winchester Hills water board. St. George Mayor Jon Pike also expressed his condolences, calling Mathis a “personal friend.” Mathis, a native of Price, graduated from Carbon High School in 1990. He and his wife, Jessica, married in 1995. They are the parents of sons Joshua, 19; Henry, 17; Kyle, 13; and Isaac, 11. In addition to his wife and sons, Mathis is survived by his parents, Frank and Marie Mathis, and five siblings.

There he met Gail Silcott and they got married. John and Gail returned to the Homm Ranch where John jointly oversaw the ranching and farming operations with his brothers, sister and parents.
