This article quoted the Most Reverend Charles F, Buddy's urgent appeal for reli- gious instruction in the Public Schools as the chief weapon for combalting the alarming crime wave among the young. A meeting of Civic Leaders, called at the invjtation of t'he Superintendent of San Diego Pub- lic Schools, at School Board Headquarters to discuss means of remedying the spread of juvenile d e l i n q u e n c y occasioned the Di.shop's statement. The article as reviewed by the News Syndicate reads as follows: SAN DIEGO-(NC) - Pleading for fairness to childron in the campaign to combat juvenile law- lessness, the Most Rev. Charles F. Buddy, Bishop of San Diego, advocated religious instructi.on for c'i1ildren in the public schools as the chief weapon for combatting the crime wave among the young. Bishop Eaddy spoke at a meet- ing of civic leaders at the local school board headquarters, called I to discuss means of putting down the spread of juvenile delinquency. Bishop Buddy stated that in the proposals of new rules and regu- lations, there was no doubt the highest of motives, but contended that providing recreational facili.- ties and multiplying laws was not the cure because "you cannot leg- islate morality into young or old, . but you can teach it with splendid results m the early formative years." He contended the crime trend has been upward too long to blaime it on the war.
