As late as Jan- uary 16, 1945, a check for $43 found its way to the Chancery from outside the Diocese-a donor tranf.terred in the course of the years had wanted to balance his pledge of seven years ago. ESTABLISHED CREDIT While it is true that the receipts from the 1938 drive did not pro- vide the means to build all of the projects under consideration, it did establish credit with the banks and made possible the borrowing of money, which has since been repaid. Those who style themselves "old-timers,' having lived in Southern California for ten years, may recall that the 1938 campaign for funds promised: 1, the Little Fwwer t.aven in La Mesa; 2, an addition to the orphanage at Ban- ning; 3, the Joan of Arc club, a Catholic home for employed young women; 4, recreational facilities to save the boy; :7, support of pri~sts to serve as chaplains in county snd city hospitals; 6, an Increase 1 of cattchists and a convent at Corona to house missionary Sis- ters; 7, dECent living quarters for Sisters and catechists doing mis- sionary work in this diocese· 8 respectable homes for priests; 9: debt liq~idation; 10, a home for the Bishop; 11, remodeling of St. Joseph's t..all for a Chancery· 12 erection of a mausoleum In iro1; I Cross cemetery, and improvement and rehabilitation of other Cath- ol.'c cemeteries.

First 'Big Gift' for Seminary Arrives from San Francisco Quotas Expected Received by Parishes, Range All Way from $500 to $42,500

The first "big gift" of the drive for $500,000 to build a major sem- inary and a boys' vocational train- ing center came to the Most. Rev. Bishop last week in the form of a $1,000 check from San Fran- cisco. Designated for the major seminary, :it is made 111p by three friends who prefer for the present to withhold their names. The gift, because unsolicited, has given impetus to those working on the drive. Another unsolicited gift of $89 came from a woman of few re- sources, who designated it for the boys' center, a project which has already caused a great deal of comment among non-catholics. This offering of $89 represents many personal sacrifices as sav- ings from hard work. SERRA CLUB HELPS At last Friday's meeting of the San Diego Serra club plans were formulated to organize lay com- mittees to assist vdth the pre- campaign big gifts solicitation. The Most Rev.
