the Sa,cred Heart to ·th1s dfocese is one of the greatest blessings since its formation nine years ago this July. These brilliant edu– cators, distinguished for their scholarship, have singularly fav– ored San Diego in establfshing a foundation in this city. I Humble Beginning · "Knowing something of their magnificent achievements throughout the East, Midwest and South, and in our own common– wealth, the stately San Francisco College for Women at Lone Moun– tain, we count it a great privilege to have members of this learnecl and fervent society identified with ' this diocese. The fact that they are willing to start in a humble way augurs well for future de– velopment. For the present they plan regular instructions in Chris– tian Doctrine for children of Old Town and vicinity, and the organi• zation of Sodalities of the Chil– dren of Mary for both young and adttlts and a Tabernacle Society. These initial tasks lay the foun– dation for mighty works that will reach far into future gerterations and beyond. / "The members of their teach– ing faculties hold academic and I collegiate degrees from Stanford, San Francisco and other .univer• sities. They form the vanguard of the nation's educators, specializ– ing in liberal arts, philosophy and · kindred sciences. They themselves have been empowered to grant collegiate degrees/'

Two-fold Objective Saint Madeleine Sophie gov– erned the Society as Superior Gen– eral for over sixty years, unceas– ingly urging her religious to have an insatiable desire for the glory of the Sacred Heart. It was said of her that she had two great loves-that of the Sacred Heart and of-children. Willingly she bore crosses, eager to suffer for iove of the Sacred Heart' and to gain souls to Him. The saint practiced humility and charity to an heroic degree. Re– markable for her gracious kind– ness to all while on earth, she continues to obtain both spiritual and temporal blessings from the Sacred Heart for those who in• voke her aid. Today the Society of the Sac– red Heart has colleges, academies and free-schools throughout Eu– rope, in Asia, Africa, Australia, North and South America. _
