constellation known as the Southern Cross, the word ‘Mirrabooka’ became the title for the popular suburb in the early 1980s. Before that, the area was known as Yirrigan. Going back further, the origins of the suburb started in 1968 after a Shire of Perth ward boundary reshuffle created the Balga Ward to cover Nollamara, Balga and Yirrigan. In 1982, Yirrigan was given the new name of Mirrabooka and since then the suburb has gone from strength to strength. It is now home to a thriving multicultural community, Stirling Leisure Centres – Herb Graham Recreation Centre, several schools, The Square Mirrabooka and Stirling Libraries – Mirrabooka, which opened in 1986.
