GETTING AROUND LONDON

London has a well known transport system which has been built over many years and is fit for the large London population living in or near the city as well as those visiting. The network is all run by Tranport for London (TFL). TYPES OF TRANSPORT You can use the following methods of transport to get around London, depending on what area you are in. The most commonly used method is the London Underground, known as ‘the tube’, and the London Bus service. Bus DLR Riverboat

OYSTER CARDS The most cost effective way to use these methods of transport is to purchase an Oyster Card when you arrive in London. These can be purchased for £5 in any tube or train station as well as local shops displaying a TFL sign. Once purchased, you can either choose to top up the balance as you go or if you will be travelling frequently it will be cheaper to pay for a travelcard which will allow you to have unlimited travel for 1 day, 1 week, 1 month or 1 year. Once you have your Oyster card and have loaded some money or a travelcard onto it, simply tap on the yellow reader to pay your fare. If you are at a tube or train station this will open the barriers for you. If you are getting a bus, you will be able to tap your card as you get on. It is also possible to use your debit or credit card as a payment method. Hover your debit or credit card on the yellow card readers if you have a contactless sign. This will deduct the fare from your bank account as you go.
