Commodore April has been an eventful month, with the Fishing Section monthly competition, school holidays, Commodore’s at Home, and the ANZAC Day long weekend. Club trading has been brisk to say the least. The reintroduction of the pie warmer at the Destroyer Bar, with the famed curry-and-prawn, lamb-and-rosemary, beef-with-burgundy, chicken- and-vegetable and lasagne pies has proven to be an outstanding success. The Commodore’s at Home saw a flotilla of 18 boats participate with Immediate Past Commodore Lyle

David and Margaret Cameron continue to beaver away with the organisation of the LSChampagne Cruise, which is now less than three weeks away and gathering a healthy tally of participants. We wish everyone well on the weather front and you can find more details on page 7 of this edition. At the Club, work will soon commence on repairing the gutters on the roof of the Bistro; once complete new clears will be installed. This should enhance prospects of being able to meet client requests for weddings and other functions when the weather

This builds on such successful regular utilisation as that of All State Boat Licensing for its monthly courses (see p.13). Members will be kept appraised of progress. Members will doubtless be aware of the considerable public discussion

Our Club, together with numerous other organisations and groups, continues to monitor this situation through both State Government and QRBC sources. All Board members have been busy this month, particularly in the areas of finance, membership, marketing and communications. Events have been a testing area with invitations being sent out to numerous Clubs and timely responses sought, not to mention the additional headaches of weather conditions for the events. Many sleepless nights were had but pleased to say that all has ended well. Thanks to our Managers and all Board members who assisted. As long-term Members will be aware HLM Bettyann Webster has carried out two important roles at the Club during the Commodore’s at Home and ANZAC Day commitments. Initial discussions with Bettyann indicated that this year she would again fulfil her normal role of ‘Keeper of the Ensign’ for the sail-past and also lead the LSC ANZAC group carrying the LSC plaque. Members’ FRIDAY NIGHT random draw now* $3,400

On medical advice, something not taken lightly, Bettyann decided to abstain from participating on the proviso that her positions be kept vacant for her next year. Rest assured that will be the case. Under my other ‘hat’ (House & Social), just a reminder that we have some special deals for Mother’s Day (Sunday 8th May) arranged, with some great package deals for visitors arriving by Flyer or by barge, and a return performance by the highly- acclaimed ‘Clampagne Strings’ trio. Talking of trios, the first ‘State of Origin’ match is on Wednesday 1st June and Members, guests and visitors are warmly welcome to watch the Maroons go 1-up on the big screen at our Club! I am sure that Tracey will pursue this topic with vigour but don’t forget Membership renewal time is fast approaching. Please continue your valued support. The recent incapacitation of our hard-working Rear-Commodore (and his Skipper!) has served as a timely reminder of how much work is concentrated in too few pairs of hands – and what happens (or what doesn’t happen) when one (or more) of those pairs of hands goes offline. More than ever, there is a need for more Members to become involved with the operation of our Club to assist the Flag Officers and Directors with their appointed portfolios. We need some dedicated Members to help lift some of the burdens in the following areas. This is not a big ‘ask’, people: we’re talking an average of one hour a week (4–6 hours each month) of phone and email time to pool resources, share expertise and lend a helping hand to our Club. Review all aspects of Club financial operations to ensure the organisation remains viable and profitable into the future. Do we have any volunteers? 3. Responsible for arranging Working Bees and identifying maintaince requirements, and assisting where possible in the rectification of maintenance issues. Do we have any volunteers? 4. Membership Committee Chaired by Director (Membership) and consists of 4 members. Responsible for promoting and administering the membership of the Club. This is an important area and requires dedicated Members to undertake and support this aspect of club activity. Do we have any volunteers?

The new 2016-17 membership year is fast approaching and your Board has been giving very careful thought to the full range of Members’ prices and benefits to take effect from 1st July 2016. There will be adjustments made across the range to better reflect the true cost of the services provided to Members. More info to come with the membership renewal notices due to be posted out and/or emailed in the second half of May. Tracey Watts Director (Membership) The past month has been a very busy time for your Treasurer – in fact the club has officially become my second home! Julie and I have been locking ourselves away in the office for many a day coming to grips with the intricacies of our inventory and point-of-sale system. After completing a day’s training (thanks, Geoff from H&L!) we em- barked on an ambitious program of cleaning up the system. Our goal was to completely overhaul the inventory records in time to speed up our rather laborious and fiddly month-end stocktake processes. “All dressed up but unable to go” would probably capture my hors de combat attendance record this past month. It’s been a particularly rough year for my four-legged Skipper, with radiation treatment in February successfully bringing his hyperactive thyroid under control, only to be followed by several weeks of antibiotics for a bladder infection which he picked up while in radioactive confinement. No sooner had this been addressed than his right eye, which had been steadily losing vision for the past year, developed acute glaucoma and very dangerous levels of over-pressure. w

It was down to the wire but we did it! A few more jobs to do tidying up the till keyboard layouts and fine-tuning our prices but the bulk of the work is done. If anyone wants to know about stock groups, WET taxes, factors and PLUs, then Julie and I are the ones to see! With our clean inventory system, Julie is now looking to expand our drinks list, particularly the wine list so look out for an improved selection soon. Thank you to the various Member suggestions which have been extremely useful in the development of new offerings. Emergency surgery was needed for the complete removal of his eye, which took me offline for the week of the April Board meeting and the Commodore’s at Home events and sail-past. Barely a week later, it was my turn, with a dry hacking cough arriving late on the Thursday before ANZAC Day rapidly spiralling out of control into full- blown pnemonia; by Sunday morning I was in ICU, on IV antiobiotics and fluids, ECGs and chest x-rays. Greatly relieved to report that both invalids are now doing somewhat better. Matt Tesch Rear-Commodore

This year’s 2016 Champagne Cruise will be held from 21st to 28th May – and the program presently looks like this: Saturday 21st Arrive at Little Ship Club and settle in. Sunday 22nd Little Ship Club – free morning and after- noon with a susage sizzle by Margaret and David for lunch. Monday 23rd One Mile to Blakesleys . Tuesday 24th Blakesleys to Gold Coast City Marina in the Coomera River. Wednesday 25th Guided tour of GCC Marina facilities and the Riviera boat building complex is being arranged. Thursday 26th GCCM to Southern Haven on South Stradbroke Island, just south of Tipplers. Free afternoon. Friday 27th Free morning followed by BBQ lunch and cruise presentations. Fishing Section : April competition

Attendance was average at 30 participants and all were keen to snare that ‘big one’ in what can only be described as perfect weather. Members fished both in the Bay and outside, off Cape Moreton in up to 50 fathoms. Too deep to watch the bait hit the bottom! Greg Nielsen’s “Karma”, fishing out in the ‘deep’, produced a varied exotic and colourful catch with the Bay anglers providing a mixed and substantial bag. Member profile

Meet Graham “Fairway” Latchford … and, no, it’s not because he’s a keen golfer. (OK, we made up the moniker but what else should someone with this boat history be called?) Current boat “Whitewash” (a Fairway 36); immediate past boat “Nebo” (a Fairway 36); prior boat “Delilah” ( a Fairway 36); the one before that …? You get the picture. Why the fascination? “They have wonderful headroom, draw 3 feet, and at 13 knots cruise comfortably.” Naturally enough, he’s a member of FOGs – the Fairway Owners Group – which hold regular social functions. Although Graham has a long history in boating (“it’s in my blood”) he is only a recently joined member of LSC. Graham joined in March 2015 thanks to the good work of Geoff Tickle (also a Fairway owner), formerly of the membership sub-committee under the Immediate Past Commodore. Graham had previously done most of his boating “from Blakesley’s - south”. He is though forever grateful to Geoff for ‘twisting his arm’. “It’s a place to come, a place to belong and a wonderful facility on the bay. Everytime we come in here, we’re meeting new people.” Graham is very much enjoying the new ‘vibe’ at the club under Craig and Julie. Favourite tipple? Graham is not particular. “Wine or beer. I will drink both happily.”

Funniest moment on the water? “When I fell in attempting to transfer from tender to boat after a FOGs function at Southern Haven. I had celebrated a little too much and needed all hands on deck to pull me up. It was late at night and, to make it worse, mid-winter!” Something people won’t know about me … Graham’s father worked in the Magistrates Court (formerly known as the Court of Petty Sessions) until he became Chief Stipendiary Magistrate. Consequently, the family moved extensively and regularly throughout Queensland and Graham attended eight different schools in his twelve years but did grade 12 at Wavell Heights High with ‘the Big Marn’, Darryl Brohman. Graham went on to become a financial planner and retired in 2010. Graham’s attitude to boating friendship is the epitome of what we should strive for at the club.

Managers’ report

We have had an exciting month full of functions and private events, big and small; it was delightful to see so many people here on Anzac Day soaking up the atmosphere and remembering those who sacrificed everything for us. We had the pleasure of having the Gold Coast Riviera Club join us for a dinner with a full house of 15 boats rafting against the pontoon and delivering us with a busy yet successful night of food, fun and laughter! The kitchen has been pumping a mile a minute and the compliments on the delicious food have been flowing in consistently along with the excitement everyone has about all our fresh and local produce … We would also like to apologise for any inconvenience caused due to our sudden shortage of staff and would like to announce that we are currently looking for another kitchen-hand to join our team of highly trained and professional staff to do the lunch shifts during the week and weekends. At some stage in the near-term future our intention is to bring back live music at least once a week, so on that note if you know any local or regional bands looking for a regular or occasional gig then forward them to us on 3409 9022 and we will discuss further information with them. That’s about all for now: time once again to focus on month-end stocktake and fixing up point-of-sales! Julz + Craig

All State Boat Licensing hires the Moreton Bay Room at the Club once a month for Boat and Jet Ski licensing on Straddie. (Last month, I overheard a couple of blokes completing their jet ski licences say “we have to come back here with our group, bring the jet skis over for the day…”) All attendees stayed for lunch and drinks. They bring all their own equipment and book the northwest end of the side pontoon. The room hire charge for the day is $50. QRBC news

With more than 250,000 registered recreational boats plying the waterways of Queensland and over 830,000 Queenslanders holding licences to drive them, the recreational boating sector is a critically important component of our economy and social infrastructure. But having that many boats and owners can raise a wide range of issues. It is therefore vital that as government regulators, we have an ordered and reliable way of engaging with them. The Queensland Recreational Boating Council plays an important advocacy role, which is why our officers meet regularly with the QRBC – as they did last week for a discussion on a range of maritime-related issues. I always find the QRBC’s monthly meeting a useful way to keep in touch with the recreational boating sector, and I was pleased to see water police, marine parks representatives and the Gold Coast Waterways Authority also in attendance – it is indicative of the QRBC’s standing across government. While the QRBC’s membership comprises of around 18 boating associations and clubs in the southeast quarter of the State, it is actively engaging with the boating community in north Queensland in an effort to provide assistance on whole-of-government or whole-of-state issues. The range of issues discussed at QRBC meetings can be quite staggering. On Wednesday night they included progress on delivery of recreational boating infrastructure along our coastline, dredging programs and placement of navigational aids (including TMR’s switching on of new lights marking the rock wall at Manly Boat Harbour). Outside of these ‘access’ issues we discussed regulatory requirements for lifejackets for people with disabilities, and methods of achieving compliance (it’s not as simple as you might think), compulsory third party insurance for boats, TMR’s ongoing management arrangements for the recently-stabilised Tangalooma Wrecks, and the practical application of the regulatory link between TMR’s motor vehicle and motor boat driving licences. The only low point of the meeting was one on which we all agreed – our disappointment over reports of vandalism to some of our offshore marine parks mooring buoys. It seems that some familiar land-based problems do not end at our low water mark. On a more positive note, repairs are being planned but they will unfortunately soak up funding that could be better used for park management and improving access for all of the boating community. I’d like to thank the QRBC for its work in supporting our recreational boaters and look forward to future meetings. The structure is temporarily lit with a flashing white light whilst fitout works are completed. A well, the previous structure, adjacent to the above position, is currently unlit whilst extraction works are completed. Crossed the Bar: Valé Dick Johnston

Just as this edition was closing, we received news of the peaceful passing, on Sunday 24th April at the great age of 93 years, of long- time LSC Member Dick (Richard) Johnston, former owner with his late wife Maggie (Margaret) of the Little Ship “Banyandah” . Dick was a Committee member and Life Member of the Fishing Section after joining the club in the 1960s, initially with the ketch “Mariner” ( “Banyandah” was launched in 1971). Despite becoming visually impaired and the loss of his beloved Maggie, for the last ten years of his life Dick continued to fish from “Banyandah”

Dick’s children – Craig Johnston, Garth Johnston, Zea Johnston, Sue Thomas, Amy (Lyn) Rawlings and Jan Benn – wrote to say they still have wonderful memories of the club, especially New Year’s Eve parties and fishing weekends – including some memorable ones trying to fish Deep Tempest in 25 knot southeasters! Dick’s funeral service will be held at Great Southern Memorial Park, 1774–1794 Mount Cotton Road, Carbrook, at 1300hrs on Friday 6th May 2016.

Business profile In previous editions of the eNews, we’ve showcased the work of photographer Luke Casey and his truly breathtaking drone imagery of not only our Club at the One Mile but also many other scenic vistas around the island, published in the Point Lookout SLSC’s 2016 calendar. This edition, we introduce the work of another island ‘snapper’ – Julie Sisco – who does some great lens work for Gerard and the team at the monthly ‘Friendly Bay Islander’ magazine, and who joined the Commodore and official party aboard the saluting vessel for this year’s sail-past on Saturday 16th April (see pictures p.5 this edition). Julie tells us that she has a gallery at Point Lookout which is open 7 days, right next door to Sisco’s Philly Cheez cafe and Dolphin Real Estate, at 1 Endeavour Street. “I photograph weddings, portraits, and landscapes,” Julie says, adding that “‘Snapshots of Straddie’ is a daily blog and email newsletter featuring images from around the island, also including interesting stories and events. It is my hope that these images bring people joy (especially those who may be stuck at their office desk wondering what it is like at Straddie today!).” Julie is also preparing to launch a new offering called ‘Straddie + You’ landscape portraits. “Essentially, we will be photographing individuals, couples or families doing what they love at Straddie, whether surfing, fishing, walking along the beach – whatever.

LSC BBQ area rules

The BBQ area is the covered structure equipped with both electric and gas hot plates, situated at the southern end of the LSC grounds. These facilities are available to both Members and non-Members by prior booking, and any impromptu arrangements will be at the discretion of the LSC Manager, subject to visitor traffic on the day. Non-exclusive arrangements Only Full Members have unrestricted use of the BBQ area at all times free of charge unless the area has been hired. Social Members and boating visitors may use the BBQ area on a non-exclusive basis for a fee of $25. Exclusive hire arrangements The BBQ area can be hired on an exclusive basis by both Members and non-Members. Only Full Members are eligible for the Members’ discount.

LSC pontoon and moorings NEW from 1st January 2016

LITTLE SHIP CLUB PONTOON USE RULES Access to the Club Pontoons is at the discretion of the Board (or Delegate) of the Club. 1. Casual and overnight berthing is available to Members and Non-Members. A booking to use the pontoon can be made with the Manager and must be confirmed 24 hours prior to arrival. If confirmation is not received the booking will be cancelled. 2. Advance bookings may be made not more than seven (7) days prior to the required date of occupancy. Bookings are for a maximum of two nights only with a departure time of 1000 hrs (additional nights or late departure are at the discretion of the Manager and subject to demand). 3. The vessel must be berthed by 1600hrs otherwise the booking will be deemed cancelled. 4. In all circumstances, arrival and departure from the pontoon must be reported to the Club’s Manager either by phone or in person, to maximise usage. 5. Members’ vessels must display a LSC burgee at all times while in occupancy. of the pontoon/s. 6. A Mooring Fee* will apply to Non-Members which can be paid in advance or on arrival and is non-refundable. A waiver of mooring fees (in whole or in part) may be granted at the discretion of the Manager, given a compelling commercial reason. 7. If leaving the Club premises while berthed at the pontoon, Members and Non-Members must inform management and accept the Acknowledgement . 8. Non-Members will need to sign into the Club as required under Licensing Law. 9. All vessels must have as a minimum Third Party insurance cover. 10. Members and Non-Members using the pontoon do so at their own risk.

11. Mooring of the vessel must maximise access for other vessels. The Board (or delegate) will direct re-mooring at its discretion. 12. Children under the age of sixteen (16) years are not to be left on board a vessel or on the pontoon in the absence of a responsible adult. 13. No alcohol is to be brought onto Club premises during bar operating hours. 14. Water is to be used for refilling water tanks only. 15. Power usage is to be limited at times of high load. 16. Major vessel repairs are not permitted on the pontoon. 17. The pontoon purpose is for Member and Non-Member use of the Club facilities, not as a marina. Breaches of the rules may lead to the withdrawal of the visitor’s pontoon access rights. The Manager of the Club is delegated the authority to enforce these rules.

Acknowledgement by Members and non-Members At the direction of the Manager (or an authorised LSC representative), the person in charge of the vessel must be prepared to: • position or reposition the vessel, or allow management to position or reposition the vessel, at any point along the pontoon. • depart or relocate the vessel, or allow management to depart or relocate the vessel (applicable to both pontoons and moorings) in the event of adverse weather conditions or other emergency should it be required.
