But where did it all start? Take a walk through our history and see how we became the thriving university we are today. We began our journey with just 50 students. Now we’re a vibrant community of almost 4,000 students from nearly 50 countries worldwide, studying a range of qualifications including undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, as well as PhDs. 2000 We hosted the European Young Rider Dressage, Showjumping and Cross-Country Championships and opened our commercial Equine Therapy Centre trip took place to Borneo. Our students now regularly travel to exotic locations. Our new dairy unit was opened by Anne, Princess Royal 2007 Our new Hartpury Arena hosted the FEI World Para Dressage Championships 2002 2012 We made the decision to work towards full university status (Hartpury University) to strengthen our influence and impact Our first international field 2014 We achieved two commendations and seven areas of best practice in the QAA's Higher Education Review, including employability and career prospects

We were awarded Taught Degree Awarding Powers, which means we can deliver our own taught degrees We celebrated becoming Hartpury University, alongside Hartpury College, in our 70 th anniversary year. Our link with the University of the West of England was forged. We were awarded Associate Faculty status and began developing our university qualifications 1999 Our first masters degree - MSc Equine Science - was launched. We now have a diverse portfolio of masters degrees across our subjects areas Post World War II: Hartpury College was established as an agricultural further education provider in Gloucestershire 1949-1953 Alongside 50 male students, the first female students enroled on our agricultural courses 1990-1994 A rapid expansion programme began, opening new further education courses in agriculture, equine and animal subjects; the first university- level degree - BSc Equine Science - was launched. We have our own successful industries on campus

Our Sports Academies attract professionals and working businesses, who work together to achieve elite sporting success. We host three international equine events each year, a qualifying dog agility competition, as well as national conferences, events and sports fixtures. We have our own commercial equine and canine therapy centres on campus, as well as a commercial farm and rider performance centre, where our students can gain professional experience. Programmes designed with industry We design and develop our programmes in line with evolving industry demands. Employers will often come to us first when looking for skilled students and graduates who can make a difference to their business, which means our students get outstanding opportunities. Specialist work placement opportunities You’ll benefit from opportunities to work across the UK and internationally, whether as part of short work placement projects or integrated placement years. You’ll also be encouraged to make the most of our businesses and events on campus to gain experience for your CV. Business and enterprise development As part of your course, you could work on live business projects and network at events such as the Gloucestershire Business Show. Impact- driven research We’re blazing a trail for animal welfare and pushing boundaries in sports performance. Our students work on valuable research projects to drive change within our specialist industries. Led by research- active lecturers, they collaborate with businesses and professional bodies to find practical solutions to real-life issues. We’re setting the bar high for industry practice. Not only that, but the research we do feeds back into our curriculum, ensuring that students and staff are at the forefront of scientific knowledge. Students are also getting their names into the public domain, co-publishing papers in journals and presenting findings at national and international conferences.

Our new Sports Academy is now open

Benefit from biomechanics and human performance labs, a rehabilitation suite, medical and physiotherapy rooms, and a 1,500m2 multi-sports hall. State-of-the-art equipment includes an anti-gravity treadmill for rehabilitation, an altitude chamber for high-intensity training, high-tech 3D cameras to track movement and high-resolution digital mirrors to map body image. Equine Therapy Centre Our commercial Equine Therapy Centre treats horses at elite and novice levels. You could support the treatment and rehabilitation of a range of horses while you’re here.

Livery, arenas and training facilities Our Equine Centre is home to 230 stables, competition arenas used for international events and specialist equipment that can be used by students for training and research. Rider Performance Centre This centre includes the most advanced riding simulator in the world, as well as dedicated strength and conditioning and therapy suites for equine athletes. On the other hand, Gloucester city and Cheltenham town are both a stone’s throw away, and have everything that urban life offers. Party after dark Doing something different after dark is an exciting part of university life. Gloucester city and Cheltenham town are both nearby and are where our students often head to when night falls. From cheesy pop clubs and cocktail bars, to unpretentious indie gigs and cosy caverns, there’s something to suit all tastes. If a bite to eat is on the agenda, you’ll find tasty world cuisines, fine dining and everything in between at Gloucester Quays, the newly developed docklands.

You’ll find over 45 music and arts festivals every year. That’s one almost every weekend. We’re seven-time British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) national champions and we were the first university team to win the BUCS Super Rugby Title. Premiership rugby team, Gloucester Rugby is based on campus. Over 50 of our students have gone through their ranks. We currently have the only student-led team in the Greene King IPA Rugby Championship.

If you’re playing sport competitively, or you have the talent and drive to do so, you may want to join one of our Sports Academies. You'll develop your sporting talent alongside your degree and academic commitments.* Our Sports Academy staff are among the best in their respective fields. They have competed or worked at professional levels and continue to uphold their standards through strong links with their national governing bodies. From Olympic Gold equestrian athletes to professional footballers and GB rowing coaches, you can be confident that you'll learn from some of the best sporting talent at Hartpury. We're an accredited Talented Athlete Centre for Sport England’s Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme . This means you could be selected for extra financial support to succeed in your sport and your studies while you're here. You don't have to study a sport course to join one of our Sports Academies. They're open to everyone across all of our subject areas. Over 200 international athletes have developed their talents with us over the past 10 years. You could be our next success story. Pursue sporting excellence through our Sports Academies

Equine Academy Our equestrian athletes receive world-class coaching to develop their competition careers. Graduates include Rio Olympic medal winner Astier Nicolas and dressage star Olivia Oakeley. Women’s Rugby Academy We currently have a team in the top tier of women’s rugby, the Tyrrells Premier 15s. Over 20 of the current England Women’s Senior, Under- 20s and Under-18s Talent Development squad have come through our rugby programme. Men’s Rugby Academy Our successful student-led team, Hartpury RFC, play and train on campus. We’re seven- time BUCS national champions. Professional players Jonny May and Alex Cuthbert are among our graduates. Women’s Football Academy Our talented women’s football team compete in the BUCS Football Western 1A division and reached the final of the BUCS Western Conference in 2018. Our women’s futsal team also compete in the BUCS Western 1A division. Men’s Football Academy Our senior football programme has established itself as among the best in the UK; we're nine-

time winners of the BUCS Premier League and four-time BUCS national champions. Successful graduates include Ghana internationals Abdul Majeed Waris and David Accam. Rowing Academy Our ladies squad has won Henley Royal Regatta for the past five years. Student Zoe Adamson won gold at the Junior World Rowing Championships in 2017 and James Cartwright won silver in 2018. James also won gold at the 2018 European Junior Championships. Golf Academy We compete in the BUCS national leagues and our players regularly achieve international titles. Student George Bryant won the English and Welsh BUCS Golf Championship in 2018. Netball Academy Our Netball Academy is coached by England Futures star Paige Reed, who is also a final year student. We’re a Performance Academy for Severn Stars Super League team and we compete in the BUCS national leagues. Athlete Performance Academy We support athletes who are competing in a range of disciplines including athletics, shooting and weightlifting.

Your Health and wellbeing

We’re committed to ensuring you’re able to enjoy all that Hartpury has to offer. Our Student Wellbeing team is on-hand to provide friendly advice and guidance when you need it most. We have qualified counsellors, nurses and wellbeing officers on site, as well as our chaplain who can offer a reassuring ear to those of all faiths. Our annual Wellfest event Wellfest in Freshers' Week is not to be missed. With everything you need all in one place, you'll pick up lots of tips, make new friends and get to chat to our support staff too. With demonstrations from public service and community teams, it addresses a range of issues including road safety, wellbeing and mental health. Wellbeing Wednesdays Wednesdays are dedicated to student wellbeing. We run a range of events throughout the year with a different theme each month. From stress-busting walks to mindfulness and yoga, our activities will help you to boost your health and wellbeing while you're here.

Study support Small class sizes mean we can get to know you as an individual and provide a support network to suit your needs. We'll give you expert advice and guidance on careers and help you be the best you can be in your studies. Achievement and Success Centre (ASC) team can make a big difference. From one-to-one support on time management, to group workshops and online resources on academic writing, the team can offer expert advice on study topics to suit you. Choosing which subject to study at university can lead to some big questions. But what about the type of qualification you choose? How will this affect your future and which one is the best fit for you? Here we help you understand your options at Hartpury. Degrees explained 39

Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree?

Foundation degree (FdSc) 2 years or 3 years with integrated placement year A foundation degree will support you to enter the vocational part of your industry. The content is hands-on and includes increased work placements and a diverse range of practical assessments. At the end of the foundation degree you should be ready to enter employment or progress onto a one- year level 6 top-up qualification to achieve a full BSc (Hons) degree. BSc (Hons) Level 6 Top-up degree 1 year A top-up qualification comes after a foundation degree or equivalent in a relevant subject. It enables you to top-up your existing qualification to a full BSc (Hons) degree in one year. Integrated Master's (MSci) degree 4 years or 5 years with integrated placement year An MSci is an exciting qualification, combining undergraduate and postgraduate-level study in one. You’ll study your full BSc (Hons) degree, with an extra year of study enabling you to pursue your subject in more detail and develop advanced research skills. It offers a great platform from which to move into employment, academia or research-based professions. Integrated placement year Gain extra hands-on experience through an optional one-year placement in industry, which will extend your course to four or five years. This could help you stand out from the crowd.

3 years or 4 years with integrated placement year The most popular undergraduate qualification is a bachelor’s degree. This is usually pursued after A-levels, diplomas or international equivalent qualifications. Bachelor’s degrees come in science (BSc) or arts (BA) subjects. A bachelor’s degree is perfect if you’re keen to develop more specialist knowledge in a particular subject while gaining skills and experience ready for your dream career. Honours or no Honours? Most first degrees in higher education come with ‘Honours’ (Hons). Although ‘Honours’ isn’t a grade, it is a mark of quality. It could help your job application stand out to an employer or your application for postgraduate study. BSc or BA (Hons) degree with foundation year? 4 years or 5 years with integrated placement year Most of our degrees offer a foundation year option, which takes an extra year to complete on top of your three or four year degree. A foundation year is ideal if you need to develop subject-specific skills ready for degree-level study. You might have been away from education for a while or you could be changing your career direction and needing to bridge a knowledge gap. You may also have studied international qualifications of a different level to those required for a UK-based degree. On successful completion you'll progress onto the first year of your degree, alongside other first year students.

We’re fast establishing ourselves as a globally-recognised centre for animal training, behaviour and performance. As new science and technologies help us to understand animals like never before, we’re able to explore ground-breaking new methods that place priority on the physical, psychological and emotional needs of an animal to maximise wellbeing and performance. Everything we teach our students is underpinned by the latest animal research – both our own and that of our industry partners. We’re creating an evidence base of best practice that’s changing the way we interact with our animals. As a Hartpury animal student, you'll work with research-active lecturers to help solve real-world issues. Our students co-author papers and present at national and international conferences. Our animal facilities are outstanding. There aren’t many other places that you’ll have access to over 70 domestic and non-domestic species on campus. Alongside that, our commercial animal businesses – canine and equine therapy centres, and livestock farm – will provide plenty of opportunities for you to develop your practical, business and communication skills and put you at the forefront of practice. Through their undergraduate dissertations, students explore their own research interests or team up with our staff to work on live briefs. Working closely with industry, they’re producing research that helps to solve the real issues within our specialist sector. With over 70 species on campus, the research possibilities are seemingly endless. Our students interact with small and large domestic and exotic species, and have access to the Canine Hydrotherapy Centre, Equine Therapy Centre and animals on our working farm.

E. coli is a bacterium commonly found in the intestines of humans and other animals. Some strains can cause severe food poisoning

Deadly bacteria found in dog bowls. We’ve discovered E. coli, salmonella and MRSA in dog water bowls, which could put animal and human health at risk. In the first project of its kind, a lecturer and graduate showed that deadly bacteria is less likely to thrive in a stainless steel bowl than a plastic one. Audiobooks could improve cows’ welfare. Our research into the effect of audiobooks and music on dairy cows’ behaviour found that cows fed for longer and were more sociable when experiencing country and classical music and audiobooks, and rested more when not exposed to them. Our findings may be used to enhance animal welfare. Dog trained to save endangered hedgehogs. Our lecturer and resident hedgehog expert has been training Henry, the special detection springer spaniel, to sniff out nesting hedgehogs in land development projects so they can be moved to safety. Injury risk for dogs jumping from cars. We've been researching dogs jumping down from car boots. We’ve found that this can cause an increased risk of developing a long-term joint disease in their front legs – particularly after long journeys. Depending on your degree, you could take us up on the fantastic opportunity to visit Mankwe Wildlife Reserve in South Africa.* You’ll experience exciting safaris and conservational fieldwork, and gain insights into important conservation issues such as anti-poaching. This once-in-a-lifetime trip includes animal tracking, night-time game drives, and behavioural observations of many species on the plains of South Africa. Students also recently heard from anti-poaching rangers first-hand, learning about the methods they use to protect highly targeted wildlife species such as rhinos and elephants in the park.
