The Art of McCartney

I t’s perhaps surprising that it’s taken until 2014 – over 50 years since his first professional recording – for someone to produce a comprehensive tribute to the music of Paul McCartney. But The Art of McCartney – the brainchild of LA producer Ralph Sall

– does just that, over 42 tracks. Comprising material McCartney recorded with The Beatles, Wings, and solo, the guest artists are all backed by McCartney’s regular touring band –

L ondon teen siblings Kitty, Daisy and Lewis (above) return with album three next year, fittingly entitled The Third. Ex-Clash guitarist Mick Jones has produced it. Speaking of ex-Beatles (see left), the late George Harrison’s solo albums (recorded for The Beatles’ Apple Records between 1968 and 1975) have been made available in remastered form for Christmas. In January, UK label Domino Records (through EMI/ Universal in Australia) will release G Stands for Go-Betweens, a four-disc retrospective of the legendary Brisbane band’s career. The Decemberists return with their first album in three years, What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World on January 16. Justin Townes Earle – fresh from a successful visit in October – will release a new album called Absent Fathers in mid-January. Ex-Oasis man Noel Gallagher returns with a second High Flying Birds album, Chasing Yesterday, in March. James Blake is reportedly over halfway through a new album, and has hinted at a Kanye West collaboration. After charming audiences and critics with his album Fear Fun, Father John Misty is releasing I Love You Honeybear in February. Jose Gonzalez – after garnering acclaim with the band Junip – is back with another solo album called Vestiges and Claws in February. Ex-Libertines frontman Carl Barat releases Glory Days with his band The Jackals in February.

The line-up of guests is eclectic to say the least: everyone from Bob Dylan growling his way through Things We Said Today , to Jane’s Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell sashaying through the Stax-influenced Got to Get You Into My Life. The best moments of any tribute album come when artists genuinely engage with the spirit of a song, and bring their own unique expression to it.
