They are a team; what one misses, the other picks up. They are complementary without opposition, two people as one. Katie Artz and Kristen Sauve, Co-Directors for AS Community Service, best exemplify thew spirit of giving which USD has worked so hard to promote through such programs as Urban Plunge and the Special Olympics. When they first got involved in Community Service, neither of them had stories of inspiration to tell. Kristen had volunteerd at a nursing home in high school, finding her interactions "very special, both to me and to them." Katie wanted to make a difference in someone else's life because she could "think of a million people who made a difference in my life." They are part of the team that as brought smiles to the faces of disillusioned children; they spend spend time conversing with disenchanted elderly citizens. Now in their fourth year of involvement, they have assumed the role of advisors for several student-run projects. Their zeal for helping others inspired them to create Band AIDS. This program gives students the opportunity to commu– nicate with HIV-positive patients. Its subsequent success is a tribute to the leadership and initiative of Kristen and Katie. Both Katie and Kristen plan to make community service part of their life beyond USD. Their experience here has revealed to them "the gift of life around us. There are always good things to be found if you just take the time to look for them."
