NROTC The mission of the NROTC is to educate and train the future officers of the United States Navy and Marine Corps. As well as taking the full course load in pursuit of a four year undergraduate degree, NROTC midshipmen take classes in such naval fields as ship systems, navigation, and amphibious operations. Indoctri– nation and training in the fleet, and the fleet marine force is conducted during four-week summer training courses each year. Upon graduation, midshipmen are commissioned ensigns in the Navy and second lieutenants in the Marine Corps, then move on to further schooling in their respective service. In the classroom, and through practical application, midshipmen are taught the importance of such qualities as integrity, initiative, and accountability. The leadership traits instilled in the future US naval officers at the NROTC level is vital to the future quality of the US Naval Service. The caliber of officers produced by the NROTC unit at USD is traditionally exceptional.
