MOLD LOCKS - SIDE INSTALLATION

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Four side locks must be used in each mold application. When in operation, the side locks contact the edges of the machined pocket to maintain parting line alignment. The cap screws are only used to retain the side locks to the mold base.

2. To maintain alignment, it is recommended that the mold base assembly be clamped together and machined in assembly to ensure proper parting line alignment.

3. Machine the side lock pockets accurately in assembly. Locate each side lock pocket on the centerline of the mold. The location is critical to avoid misalignment problems which could result from uneven thermal expansion of the separate mold halves. 4. Mount the female interlock on the half which will have the highest operating temperature. Normally, this will be on the “A” side of the mold. This procedure is critical to ensure the male side lock does not grow larger than the female side lock if uneven mold temperatures are present.

5. After installation, open and close the mold on the bench to ensure proper alignment.

MOLD LOCKS - GUIDE INSTALLATION

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Four sets of guide locks must be used in each mold application. When in operation, the engaged guide locks contact the edges of the machined pocket to maintain parting line alignment. The cap screws are only used to retain the guide locks to the mold base. It is extremely important that the pockets be very closely machined and very accurately aligned.

2. The centerline of each guide lock pocket should be located on the centerline of the mold. The location is critical to avoid misalignment problems which could result from uneven thermal expansion of the separate mold halves. 3. Mount the female guide lock components on the half which will have the highest operating temperature. Normally, this will be on the “A” side of the mold. This procedure is critical to ensure the male guide lock does not grow larger than the female guide lock if uneven mold temperatures are present.

4A. To maintain accurate alignment between the parting lines, it is recommended that the male guide lock pocket be machined for and installed first.

4B. Finish the female guide lock pocket relative to the centerline of the installed male guide lock. Gage blocks may be used to establish a finish size for the left/ right female gib and each gib can be ground on its outer surface to suit a 0.0002” clearance per side. Do NOT alter the male guide lock component. It may also be necessary to use clearances greater than 0.0002”; moldmaker to adjust to suit application.

5. After installation, open and close the mold on the bench to ensure proper alignment.

6. Always maintain lubrication on the interlocks to extend the life of each component.
