FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Members, Happy New Year, twice. From the tree lighting in early December to fantastic celebrations on New Year’s Eve welcoming the calendar new year, events at The Club were nearly filled to capacity. Celebrations continue for the second new year, Chinese New Year, including special meals and the daily Prosperity Toss that continues through Februar y 8. I hope you’ve enjoyed these events or, if you were traveling, that holidays with friends and family were fabulous. It’s a delight to enjoy these activities in the redeveloped Clubhouse. From new restaurants to the new spa and gym, and more,The Club has become even better.Vir tually all the facilities are fully open now, with some work ongoing to fix small issues or enhance spaces fur ther. I hope you’re enjoying the new spaces and settling smoothly into new routines. And do take advantage of The Club’s expanded activities, from new spa ser vices and meal options to speakers and author talks. I’d like to thank the four General Committee (GC) Members who stepped down in November—Dana Hvide, Ken Fagan, Aaron Kim and Ashok Lalwani—for their years of dedicated ser vice. There have already been many changes in the shor t time since the AGM in November, when four new Members were elected to the GC. Longstanding Committee Members and Chairs were removed in December and new Committee Members were appointed, as you’ll see from lists online, so you’ll likely see changes in Committee activities. Bylaw changes sped through, as you’ll see in the bylaws on the website, and you may see fur ther changes once the Rules Committee has a chance to review these changes or fur ther changes are proposed. Upcoming areas of focus for the GC include the budget for the next fiscal year and taking full advantage of our Clubhouse. Identifying a new General Manager is also a key task for the GC, and the GM Search Group that is working

on the selection process has committed to providing regular updates to Members, so you’ll hear more about their effor ts soon. I’d like to give special recognition to the Green Team at The Club for their work on sustainability. Some of their work, such as better recycling bins and using less plastic in food outlets, is ver y visible. There is also lots happening behind the scenes, from replacing inefficient taps with water-saving ones and housekeeping using many fewer plastic bottles to using new fr yers that reduce electricity usage while producing tastier food and replacing lights or equipment to reduce electricity usage. Along with helping to save the planet, the Team is saving tens of thousands of dollars annually. You can do your par t by signing up to receive news about how you can do more (http://bit.ly/tacsustainability), returning towels (600 disappear ever y month!), opting not to take plastic containers and more. To close, please let me suggest three areas of focus for us as Members this year. The first is joy, to enjoy the new Club building and new activities. The second is kindness, to focus on being kinder to our fellow Members and bringing back the unity that is central to The Club. And the third is thanks, for our fantastic staff who make The Club such an enjoyable place. While I’ll reach term limits later in the year and will move out of this role as well as off the GC, I look forward to continuing to ser ve you while I remain your president and wish you a wonderful year ahead. Best Regards,

Richard Hartung

1 THE AMERICAN CLUB SINGAPORE

FROM THE ACTING GENERAL MANAGER

Dear Members, The New Year is a time for beginnings, for opening the door to new oppor tunities. At The Club, we’re throwing open the doors of our new Clubhouse to welcome Members into our home away from home. With revitalized facilities, outlets and programs, The Club has more to offer than ever before and we’re excited at the possibilities. We understand that navigating the new Clubhouse can be more confusing due to the change in layout, so the Membership team is offering guided tours for Members – more details in this magazine. It’s a great time to show off The Club to your friends and encourage them to join our community. The Win/Win Plus membership referral program has been extended to March 31, 2020, with Members enjoying additional F&B vouchers when their friends join. Even as we enjoy the fully operational Clubhouse, work to improve the new spaces continues. Over the next year, The Club will work with the appointed redevelopment contractors to rectify any defects and ensure quality throughout our facilities. The staff team is also familiarizing itself with the new outlets, striving to optimize workflow and ser vice levels. We greatly value your feedback as it helps us to improve. Along with the Clubhouse enhancements, it’s time to enhance our safety and security by activating the access control capability that has been installed. This Spring, The Club will progressively launch new access control measures at the walkway next to the Guardhouse, the Lobby entrance and the Gym. A turnstile has been installed at the entr y to the walkway next to the Guardhouse and access control for vendors will be implemented at this entr y point, similar to the turnstile access control that was implemented much earlier at the car park entrance. Once access control is implemented at the Lobby entrance, guests will be greeted by our Concierge team and directed to the Lobby waiting area while Members are notified of their arrival. Likewise, The Gym will also switch to card access soon. Members can simply tap their Membership card to enter, similar to the current Thinkspace Business Centre entrance. Safety

remains one of The Club’s top priorities, and these new measures help make security more convenient for all. More details on the phased implementation of these new access control points will be made available soon. To complement your new Clubhouse experience, you can also look forward to the unveiling of our new website in the coming months with enhanced visuals, more intuitive navigational features and seamless transactional experience. The Club is also committed to sustainability and corporate social responsibility. Through reduced usage of plastic, the B.Y.O.B. (bring your own box/bottle) program at Central and even the choice of FSC paper for this magazine, we want to do our par t in working towards a sustainable future. Now you can enjoy a paperless subscription to the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times and TAC Overdrive. Just connect to The Club Wi-Fi network for complimentar y access to electronic reading material. The Green Team, comprising staff representatives from key outlets, works closely with the Sustainability Working Group to continually identify oppor tunities to do more to protect our environment. With many exciting events and offerings to look forward to, we are entering 2020 with anticipation. My team and I will work hard to make The Club a fun, vibrant place for Members to connect, relax and recharge. Members are the hear t of The American Club, and we hope to see the community come together and celebrate that over the year to come. If you have any feedback or suggestions, feel free to swing by the Management office when you’re next at The Club, or drop me a line at generalmanager@amclub.org.sg. Wishing you happiness, good health and prosperity in the Year of the Rat!

SUSTAINABILITY

To help our Members kick start the year on a green note, The Club gave away a Green Pack worth $122 comprising two silicone reusable flexi e-zip bag (one large and one medium), one pack of four resealable, reusable straws and one silicone collapsible flexi bottle, courtesy of Lexngo, a green company who launched the world’s first collapsible meal box. To take part in the giveaway, Members were invited to send their Green Goals for the year to info@amclub.org.sg . We received over 45 entries and one lucky winner was picked at random – a big congratulations to Claudia Kimura ! A big thank you to everyone who pledged to Go Green – stay tuned for more sustainability updates coming your way by subscribing to our regular e-newsletter.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE GREEN GOALS SUBMITTED BY OUR MEMBERS

“As a teacher, my green goal is to have students bring in snacks that do not require any type of plastic packaging. That means encouraging them to either prepare their own snacks and pack them in boxes, or purchase snacks with eco-friendly packaging.” – Claudia Kimura “We pledge to eliminate 80% of single use plastic by carrying water in a reusable water bottle and using wax paper instead of plastic wrap to cover food.We will reduce our carbon footprint by planting 100 trees as part of a reforestation campaign and using ceiling fan instead of the AC at night.” – John Diener and family “I commit to taking faster showers at The Club, bring my own mug and containers and use fewer paper towels in the toilets.” – Yeoh Yung Juen “I commit to reducing the carbon footprint of my household. Starting with bringing our own carriers and containers whenever we visit markets and food courts. I have been practicing this when I bring my coffee mug to Central for my daily brew. We also want make sure of proper recycling of the stuff we are disposing. We want a better environment for our future generation. Thank you for doing this.” – Yeo Siah Meng

“I commit to less plastic pollution, whether it’s remembering to carry our reusable shopping bags, and to not buy single use plastics. I’d also like to keep clothing purchases to a minimum and to try to source second hand items if needed. I’m sure my husband will love that idea the most!” – Samantha Van Norman “We are making effort to stop the use of single use plastic in our lives – specifically around school lunches and disposable eating containers. We are also focused on keeping the beaches clean by participating in efforts around Singapore.” – Norah Rahamim “I commit to never forgetting my shopping bags, taking my own cutlery and dishware to hawker centers, setting my air conditioning one degree higher at home and buying pre- owned clothes and shoes for myself and my kids.” – Joanna Whitley

TREE LIGHTING EVENING An annual tradition, our Tree Lighting Evening held on December 5 was our most successful par ty yet! The crowd was treated to amazing renditions of beloved Christmas carols by the Stamford American International School Middle School Choir – of which a number of our Members’ children were a par t of. Everyone was in high spirits when the lights dimmed and Santa sauntered into the ballroom accompanied by flashing disco lights, much to the delight of our Members! Together with our President Richard Har tung and Acting General Manager Patricia Au, Santa lit our Christmas Tree and all the festive lights in the entire Club were also lit simultaneously. The audience went wild and excitement was in the air as everyone waited patiently for their turn to take family pictures with Santa. What a great star t to the festive season!

STARS N’ STRIPES CAMPS The Fall (Oct 14 – 25) and Winter (Dec 16 – Jan 10) editions of our Stars n’ Stripes Camp were absolute hits with our young Campers! As redevelopment comes to an end, we thought it’ll be fitting for the little ones to explore our brand new Clubhouse. Campers par ticipated in scuba diving, MMA and completed The Amazing Race right here in the hear t of The Club! Keep your eyes peeled for more information on our Stars n’ Stripes Spring Camp, happening in March and April!

NICHE GROUP PARTIES Other than discounts all year round at almost all our outlets, one of the most prized privileges as a Niche Group Member is getting to attend our exclusive themed par ties not available to the general membership. Here’s a peek at what went down at our most recent Niche Group Par ties! (OCTOBER 21, 2019) The Galbraith Ballroom was transformed into a cozy space complete with plush pillows and soft silk drapes across the ceilings in anticipation of our first-ever Arabian Night Elite Par ty. Members gamely dressed to the theme, with Mr Tan Chee-Chye and Ms Pauline Nelson winning the Best Dressed awards for the night. Members enjoyed complimentar y henna painting and were treated to a mesmerizing belly dance performance. Our Chefs went all out to curate an Arabian- themed menu comprising beef kofta with tzatziki sauce, saffron rice pilaf with raisins, cardamom and cinnamon sticks, baklava and more. Lastly, no event at The Club will be complete without a lucky draw – Mr Kelly Tan and Ms Michelle Her tz brought home two carpets sponsored by Hedger’s Carpet Galler y. What an amazing night! 10K/15K: CHRISTMAS @ CLAYMORE PARTY (DECEMBER 9, 2019)

The festive cheer was cer tainly thick in the air as our 10K and 15K Members gathered for a magical Christmas par ty. Although it may be summer all year round in Singapore, the fireplace backdrop with stockings cer tainly added to the charm of a cozy and homey wintry Christmas. Our carefully curated menu of American festive fare was a big hit among Members who may be homesick for Christmas traditions back home, and Christmas songs by our live band added to the enchanting atmosphere. Last but not least, a big congratulations to Mr Kelvin Cumbers and Mrs Debra Minnock for winning the Best Dressed Awards! Flip to page 21 for more information on Niche Group qualifying criteria.

20/20 NEWYEAR’S EVE PARTY

It was a night of revelry as we bid farewell to the end of the decade with a Roaring Twenties par ty. Over 90 Members dressed up in their best 1920s-inspired outfits – think glittery bedazzled flapper dresses with feather headbands and long pearls, and dapper tuxedos with Panama hats. Members sat down for a luxurious three- course set dinner and par tied the night away with our live band The Good Karma. Prosecco was served, and Members ushered in the NewYear with lots of hugs and a chorus of “Happy New Year” greetings at midnight. A big congratulations to the Masieros for winning the Best Dressed Male and Female prizes!

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT YOUR STAY AT THE FOUR SEASONS LANGKAWI? We had high expectations when we made our reser vation. Several of our friends, who would not be offended if we called them hotel snobs, described the Four Seasons Langkawi as the nicest resor t they have ever stayed at. We’re here to tell you that they weren’t wrong! It was ver y relaxing, and the ser vice was top notch. Our favorite par t was the sunrise yoga session by the lotus pond, after which we strolled along the resor t’s private beach before taking a dip in the Andaman Sea. The resor t is tucked away within an UNESCO World Geopark, and the proper ty is right on the shore of the Andaman Sea. The Malay- style pavilions are completely secluded and private, yet you feel like you are in the jungle! This is one resor t where you definitely don’t need to go exploring offsite. The food and ser vice is excellent, and the sunset view from the Rhu Bar is stunning. WHAT SET YOUR TRIP APART FROM OTHER TRIPS YOU HAVE TAKEN?

WHAT FOOD AND ACTIVITIES DID YOU TRY? We enjoyed Malaysian cuisine at the Ikan-Ikan Restaurant, and breakfast ser ved with bubbly. For activities, we had the chance to kayak, sail, and cycle around the island. WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR TRIP? The boat trip through the mangroves of Kilim River and the pristine, uninhabited outlying islands. It’s HEAVEN! Yes! This trip was outstanding. Staff at the resor t were absolutely superb, and always happy to meet all our needs. As we have specific dietar y requirements, they introduced us to the head chef who did a magnificent job of taking care of our meals. The quality of food was excellent. Thank you Four Seasons Langkawi for a wonderful and memorable stay. Want a chance to win a prize of your own? Drop your chits in the Niche Group Lucky Draw box at the Lobby for a chance to win our attractive prizes! Draw is open to Niche Group Members only. WOULDYOU RECOMMENDTHE FOUR SEASONS LANGKAWI TO FELLOW CLUB MEMBERS?
