1996 Season Preview
1
., .,
The USO men's soccer team will begin the 1996 season with an eagerness to return to post season competition. Last year, the Toreros season ended on a bitter note with an opening round loss to Santa Clara in the NCAA playoffs. This season, USO will look to erase that playoff memory while defending the West Coast Conference crown. In 1996, the Toreros return seven starters, including All– WCC First Team member James Wang and WCC Freshman of the Year Leighton O'Brien. O'Brien earned second team West Region All American honors after totaling six goals and eight assists in his rookie year. Wang is the key to the Toreros defense and has the most experience on the team playing in 55 career games. Lafe Vittitoe and Levi Parker also return scoring 25 points between them. Vittitoe played in all 19 games while Parker's season was cut short by injury. Once again there will be a battle in the nets between Carlos Castellanos and Joe Panian. The two juniors split time last year with Castellanos starting in nine games and Panian get– ting the nod in ten. Castellanos began the '95 season as the starting goaltender with Panian talcing over midway through after shutting out Butler and being named WCC Player of the Week. Castellanos came back to start the final two games of the year and recorded hi s second shutout against Loyola Marymount in the conference finale. Head coach Seamus McFadden begins his eighteenth sea– son at the helm of the Torero soccer program and is a four-time WCC Coach of the Year recipient including the past two sea– sons. He is the winningest coach in the WCC over the past four years with 58 wins and has guided USO to the NCAA tournament five of the past six years. The Toreros have twelve newcomers on the '96 roster in– cluding nine All-League selections, five AII-CIF First Team members and two All-State picks. Key newcomers for the Toreros will be transfer Nicholas Kalafatich and freshman twins Erin and Brian O'Connor. Kalafatich scored 5 goals and 13 points for Seattle Pacific last season and will try to fill the void left by Guillermo Jara, the Toreros all-time leader in goals, as– sists and points. The O'Connor brothers are the second set of twins to play in the WCC and will add depth at the midfield and backfield positions. Brian is an AII-CIF First Team selection while scoring 12 goals and recording 18 assists for San Pasqual last year. Erin is a two-time AII-CIF and All-League selection. Once again the Toreros will have several players with inter– national experience to contribute. Besides returnee Keith Finnegan (Ireland), five of the twelve newcomers have played overseas (Federico Seitun, Nicholas Kalafatich, Ulf Stierna, Miguel Suazo and Daniel Blake).
The '96 Schedule
San Diego will face four playoff teams during the 1996 cam– paign including the defending national champion Wisconsin Badgers. USO opens on the road playing Wisconsin along with Western Kentucky in matches at Cal State Fullerton. The Toreros home opener will be September 8 against Stanford also beginning a five-game homestand. For the fourth straight year, USO will host the Diadora Cup with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, UC Santa Barbara and California competing. The Sev– enth Annual MetLife Classic begins the following weekend with Michigan State, UNC Charlotte and San Diego State. The road to the WCC title will begin in San Francisco on October 4 and end at St. Mary's on November 16. The Toreros face NCAA quarterfinalist Santa Clara on October 13 at Torero Sta– dium and NCAA semifinalist Portland on October 25 also at USO. wee and the FarWest Poll There are two important aspects of the USO season: How the Toreros fare in the West Coast Conference race and where they stand in the Far West Region rankings. The WCC race offers a means for automatic qualification into the NCAA tournament. At-large bids into the NCAA ge nerally go to the top four teams seeded in the Far West Reg ion poll conducted by the ISAA. Last year three WCC teams competed in the NCAA tourney with Portland reaching the semifinals.

MetLife Perhaps the biggest highlight of the USO home soccer sea– son, the annual MetLife Classic draws more fans, media cover– age and excitment to Torero Stadium than any other event. By lending its name and support, the MetLife Company and USO have teamed to field one of the best tournaments in the West. This year the Toreros will host UNC Charlotte, Michigan State and San Diego State September 20-22 at Torero Stadium. Torero Stadium Soccer night at Alcala Park draws with the best collegiate programs in the country in terms of attendance. Last season alone, USO drew over 13,000 fans for 11 home dates, averaging 1,240 spectators per game. USO ranked ninth in average atten– dance out of the institutions that competed in the NCAATour– nament last year. The West Coast Conference The WCC is considered one of the top soccer conferences in the nation. WCC teams have reached the NCAA Final Four five times in since 1988 (Portland 1988 & 1995; Santa Clara 1989 & 1991 ; USO 1992) with Santa Clara becoming co-national champs in 1989. San Francisco owns four national titles. In 1993, the WCC placed four teams in the NCAA tournament, more than any other conference.

With the recent success enjoyed by the Torero soccer teams the last few years - five NCAATournament appearances in six seasons - it is easy to overlook the remarkable job Coach Seamus McFadden has done building the program from the ground up. Last year, McFadden was named West Coast Conference Coach of the Year for a record fourth time ('95, '94, '92, '86). In his tenure, McFadden has coached four Defen– sive Players of the Year, two Offensive Players of the Year and two Freshman Players of the Year. McFadden arrived at USD in 1979 and fielded USD's first team in the fall of 1980. That same year he was quoted in the team's yearbook as saying: "I have no doubts that in the near future the University of San Diego will become a force to be reckoned with in Southern California intercollegiate soccer." How prophetic his words turned out to be. The 1986Toreros won 19 of 24 games. The 1990 squad, led by the first ofMcFadden's four All-Americans, dropped just three games the entire season and advanced to the NCAA Second Round. Those who know McFadden closely could see the writing on the wall many years earlier, when the Irshman led Mesa JC to a 30-4 record over two seasons while at the same time guiding Clairemont High to consecutive CIF-San Diego Section titles and the La Jolla Cup. The whole puzzle came together in 1992 when McFadden had in place several of San Diego's best local talent. Student-athletes, who in the past had looked outside the city to showcase their talents, were suddenly arriving at Alcala Park. The 1992 Toreros showed remarkable poise under their leader, compiling a 19-5 record and advancing to the NCAA Championship Game. The 44-year old McFadden seems to save his best coaching for the big games. Twice the Toreros have marched onto UCLA's home turf and walked away with stunning upsets over the heavily-favored Bruins. In 1994, USD shutout No. 6 ranked N.C. State, 3-0, in front of a national cable audience. USD can boast of a .600 winning percentage in NCAA games under McFadden's direction. McFadden played collegiately at San Diego State, where he received a B.A. degree in History in 1976. That same summer he was with the San Diego Jaws of the North American Soccer League. Keeping true to his native roots, McFadden passionately rooted for the Irish side in the '94 World Cup but still maintained enough objectivity to serve as a correspon– dent for USA Today. A native of Donegal, Ireland, Seamus and his wife davette have two daughters (Hadley & Rorye) and a son (Conor). The McFaddens reside in Rancho Penasquitos.

Assistant Coach (5th Season)
Assistant Coach Harry Tweedie returns for his sixth season at USD. A native of Belfast, Northern Ireland, Tweedie is a veteran of 16 years playing in many of his homeland's top leagues. Tweedie immigrated to the U.S. in 1970 and since has had an extensive background in coaching and player development in this country. He was head coach of the San Diego Villa Under 19 team which captured the McGuire Cup as National Champi– ons in 1979 and 1980. He will assist Coach McFadden with practice and game preparations, scouting and player evalua– tion.
Assistant Coach Marc Thiebach begins his fifth season with the Toreros. Thiebach was a two-year performer at the midfielder's position at USD ('85-'86), graduating with a B.S. degree in International Relations in 1987. He is currently com– pleting work on a Master's degree in Educational Administra– tion.
