Richmond is known for its important place in American history as a city that was a focal point during the Colonial, Revolutionary and Civil War eras. Today, Richmond is a flourishing Southern city offering visitors a fascinating look into the past with various museums and historical sites, but it also provides a 21st-century experience with many cultural and outdoor activities. The fall and winter seasons are the perfect time to visit Richmond’s many museums. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts opened back in 1936 and has a number of excellent exhibits on show. Be sure to check out the ongoing Fabergé and Russian Decorative Arts exhibition — it is the largest public collection of imperial Easter eggs outside of Russia. The Science Museum of Virginia, housed in a 100-year-old train station, is home to the world’s fastest and highest-flying production aircraft, the SR-71 Blackbird. This iconic, supersonic stealth plane is the focal point of the Museum’s exhibition gallery, Speed. “Suspending a supersonic jet from the ceiling of a historic train station presents some challenges,” says Richard Conti, chief wonder officer, Science Museum of Virginia. Richmond’s temperate climate allows lots of outdoor activities, such as being a spectator at the thrilling Richmond International Raceway. This 1,000-acre, multi-purpose facility hosts concerts, festivals and, of course, races throughout the year.
