TheDSM-IVTaskForcewas awareof the long-standingdebate–beginningwithAristotleandPlatoand renewed in theMiddleAges–overhow thehumanmindpercievesandconstructsourworld.We pondered theviewsof the following threeumpires, eachofwhomhasaverydifferent understandingof theway inwhich theirbaseballworld isexperiencedandorganized:

Epistemologicalumpire I: Thereareballsand therearestrikesand I call themas theyare. Epistemologicalumpire II: Thereareballsand therearestrikesand I call themas I see them. Epistemologicalumpire III: Therearenoballsand therearenostrikesuntil I call them.
