Why it pays to invest in education FOR the best prospects in life for your children it pays to invest – and parents need to do their homework if looking to independent schools. Once the primary aim was purely academic excellence with a path to the Oxbridge universities, albeit often with a solid grounding in sports too – just think of the Boat Race. But the route has broad- ened considerably with spe- cialist teaching staff in a wide variety of subjects and a di- verse and inspiring range of activities and trips to nurture self-confidence, aspiration and help develop each child’s personality. The road begins with pre- and prep schools and conti- nuity through to GCSE with options of day and boarding education. The key areas to look for are Science, Technology, Engineer- ing and Mathematics (STEM), arts, sport and life skills and to see how the schools compare for results and awards. School trips take on a whole newmeaning with internation- al links that can bring expedi- tions as well as volunteer pro- jects at home and abroad that develop community involve- ment for a confidence-boost- ing rounded personal devel- opment. To check out the independ- ent schools’ official ratings, the government-approved Inde- pendent Schools Inspectorate (www.isi.net) is monitored by Ofsted on behalf of the De- partment for Education. Your child might be gifted with a particular talent, such as in music, drama, craft or sport, that can be developed and honed to world class distinc- tion – just look at local schools’ alumni such as Matt Aldridge who became a rowing world championship medallist. Looking further afield, it was a passion for arts and crafts developed at an independent school that saw Queen’s neph- ew David Armstrong-Jones, 2nd Earl of Snowdon, former- ly titled Viscount Linley as Princess Margaret’s son and known professionally as Da- vid Linley, become a world-re- nowned furniture maker and chairman of auction house Christie’s UK. But you don’t need to be a royal to carve out a first class future, and, if funding is an issue, students in higher ed- ucation can apply for money directly from their university or college in the form of bursa- ries, scholarships and awards on top of any other student fi- nance. Unlike university loans you don’t have to pay this money back. Each university or college has their own rules about bursaries, scholarships and awards, for example who qualifies, how much you can get and how to apply.
