Religious Studies

What kind of person do I need to be? You should have empathy for people with different beliefs and be capable of adopting a sensitive approach in trying to understand alternative points of view. Having a genuine interest in people and world cultures will be impor tant but you should also be capable of debating the key topics that separate belief systems. Doing so will require you to think for yourself and to have a critical approach towards contemporary issues. You should also have good analytical skills, be able to problem solve and be capable of expressing yourself clearly. How do I get there? Entry routes vary depending upon your chosen career and the role of a religious leader could be seen as more of a ‘calling’ rather than a job role. Some industry sectors will require you to hold a relevant degree or a postgraduate qualification whereas others will accept cer tificate and diploma qualifications at either Level 2 or Level 3. For some careers there are age restrictions in place and a need for Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) clearance. Apprenticeships will offer you on the job training for those job roles that require relevant experience but a good star ting point is to gain several GCSEs at Grade C or above, especially in English and maths.

What skills will I learn? Religious studies is a subject that will allow you to explore the traditions of the world’s religions while weighing some of the more controversial issues of today’s society. You will learn to study the meaning behind religious texts and understand how they can be applied to the modern world. While gaining an appreciation for different cultures and beliefs, you will develop your ability to research and retain complex information, identify key points, analyse findings and present a well-reasoned argument. You may even have the oppor tunity to learn a new language.
