Education

Sector Outlook Education is a broad sector covering a variety of job roles. Teaching, whether its in early years, primary or a secondary context, often comes to mind first. Most job opportunities can be found in maintained local authourity schools, voluntary aided schools and academies with other vacancies on offer in independent schools. You could also consider vacancies with English language schools or decide to work privately as a tutor. If you train for the lower end of the primary age range you could expand your job search to include nursery schools. Alternatively, if you train for the upper age range, options could be available where teaching still occurs in middle schools. Teachers who train in the secondary age range (11-18 years) may also consider middle schools where they exist. If you need to work on a more flexible basis you could register as a supply teacher through an agency or agree a contract with a school of your choice. As a teacher you can also consider work overseas. Exchange programmes, particularly with the USA and Australia, will give you valuable insight and help you reach a decision as to whether such a move is right for you. You could also contact Voluntary Service Overseas (VSA) about opportunities to teach abroad. To find out more, make use of resources such as the Times Educational Supplement, Guardian Jobs, local authourity websites and the local press. Specialist recruitment agencies such as Supply Desk, Eteach and Randstad Education are another good source of job vacancies. Teaching opportunities also take place in further and higher education with colleges and universities being the main employers. Similarly opportunities may exist with institutions offering postgraduate qualifications such as law and business schools. The British Accreditation Council provides useful information on accredited institutions. Alternatively you could work overseas or with the Prison Service. In many cases you will need to be proactive and network to find the vacancies on offer. However, useful resources include the Times Higher Education Jobs section and websites such as PhD Jobs. Other job roles outside of teaching include administrative posts with colleges, universities and schools. Local authourities employ educational psychologists working in schools, colleges, nurseries, community environments and special units. Community education officers can find employment in the voluntary sector, the public sector or with local government. As a careers adviser you could work for the National Careers Service or in an educational setting. Overall job opportunities within education are set to rise although vacancies may be less readily available between 2016 and 2018 before rising again. There is a particular demand for maths teachers but notably local authourities budget cuts have meant that some job roles, such as careers adviser, have been reduced in number. However, there are a sufficient number of career pathways within the sector from which you could chose.
