Golf Industry

Sector Outlook If you’re interested in working with golf, it’s helpful to look at the trends developing within the sport. Despite the recession, the golf industry is forecasted to grow with global expectations. One of the key reasons for this expected growth is the willingness of the sector to keep in step with the times. Golf is becoming increasingly popular in China and India as an increasing number of people become affluent enough to make the most of their leisure time. Opportunities to work in Asia could be worth considering if you are interested in gaining some essential experience abroad. Other key trends show that golf is attracting more women and to remain profitable many clubs will need to cater for their needs on and off the course. The availability of crèche and playgroup facilities, for example, will become a primary concern and as more men emphasise the need for quality time with their families, golf clubhouses will need to offer a more family-friendly environment with cafés and family rooms rather than bars and restaurants. These demographic changes mean that vacancies for childcare and hospitality roles will inevitably increase. Career opportunities within the tourism industry could also grow as golf continues to form part of tourism development strategies. Not only is the sector broadening to encompass other industries, it is also embracing new technology. The use of golf simulators for improving game play, video technology for reviewing progress, mobile technologies for helping golfers to plan their approach to the game, and developments in club design could lead to a demand for technically qualified staff. Keep a look out for government initiatives in your area that might generate opportunities. SkillsActive, for example, is to receive more than three quarters of a million pounds to improve access to specialist qualifications and increase the number of apprentices in fitness and leisure. Elsewhere the government’s drive to reduce obesity levels in the UK is strongly focused on the sports industry. Paid work does tend to be very competitive with many employees working on a freelance basis. With that in mind, it’s worth considering voluntary work. If you are willing to accept a voluntary position, you’ll find it will help you to make useful contacts as many job opportunities are secured through word of mouth. It is also worth noting, however, that some employers look for candidates who can offer vocational qualifications as well as experience. If you want to play golf at a professional level then voluntary experiences will literally be part of the game. In the UK there are only around 50,000 professional sports people and many are spotted at an early age by scouts. If you are looking for inspiration and an opportunity to fulfil your potential then organisations such as the Professional Golfer’s Association (PGA), are worth contacting at www.pga.info.
