4. Forecast Activity Across the North Sea

In Summary T he Decommissioning Insight 2017 Continental Shelves. Forecasts are provided for the period 2017 to 2025 to give a comprehensive picture of forthcoming activity, enabling operators and the supply chain to plan for decommissioning in the most cost-effective way. Close to 2,500 wells are expected to be plugged and abandoned across the North Sea by 2025, with more than two-thirds in the UK. Around 200 platforms are forecast for complete or partial removal, with just under half in the UK sector. On the seabed, there is an extensive network of pipelines and other subsea infrastructure that will eventually need to be decommissioned. After depressurisation and the removal of hydrocarbons, current forecasts suggest around 7,800 kilometres of pipeline could be decommissioned by 2025.
