Hamsters

Be warned, overgrown teeth can lead to serious and even fatal problems for hamsters. The chance of your pet developing teeth problems is much less if it is fed correctly and has lots of suitable toys. Nails In the wild a hamster keeps its nails in trim by run- ning and digging. A pet hamster’s nails may grow too long, which will make moving very uncomfortable as the nails can curve over and dig into the bottom of the feet. Providing your hamster with a digging pit will help keep his nails in good condition and give him a lot of fun. If your hamster’s nails are overgrown then they will need to be trimmed. It is advised that you have them trimmed by the vet or an experienced hamster keeper who has done the task before. Bumble foot This is an extremely painful condition and is charac- terised by the feet being swollen and blistered, which can turn into open pressure sores. The infection can spread to the bones of the feet and if you see such signs on the feet of your hamster then you must take him to the vet as soon as you can.
