ACADEMIC COUNSELOR (POSITION I)

General Statement of the Function : The Academic Counselor reports to the Vice President for Student Services and is responsible for the implementation of the College’s overall recruitment program, assisting with the implementation of the advisement-intervention program, counseling students, recruiting students, processing admissions information, and administering general guidance functions.

Duties and Responsibilities :

1. Plans and implements the overall recruitment program for the College; 2. Assists with the planning and implementation of the advisement-intervention program for advising all full-time students; 3. Assists with the planning and implementation of the advisement-intervention program for part- time and evening students; 4. Assists with all retention efforts; 5. Works closely with and serves as a liaison with the recruiters at all of Mississippi’s four-year universities and colleges in regard to their recruitment of the College’s sophomore students; 6. Serves as sponsor of the Warrior Corps (student organization which assists in recruiting and functions as the official hospitality group) and prepares them for all of their responsibilities; 7. Teaches a leadership course for Warrior Corps members; 8. Maintains student personnel records relating to testing, counseling, scholarships, ACT scores, etc; 9. Assists with reviewing absentee reports and counseling students who have excessive absences; 10. Works closely with the Public Information Office in regard to recruiting efforts and publicity; 11. Assists with the administration and planning of registration, Senior Days, and summer orientation; 12. Serves as the liaison with all of the high school counselors in the College’s five-county district; 13. Serves as the College’s ACT testing supervisor and is responsible for the administration of the national ACT includes compiling statistical data for the ACT service; 14. Assists students in identifying and achieving appropriate career objectives; 15. Assists students in planning their programs for transfer to four-year colleges and universities; 16. Contacts and counsels students who plan to withdraw from college; 17. Chaperones student services activities/events during the college year as assigned; 18. Assists students with planning class schedules; 19. Assists with retention surveys and other annual surveys of current and former students; 20. Expands professional knowledge through the reading of literature and participation in professional organizations; 21. Presents workshops and presentations regarding time management, how-to-study topics, and other “student success” topics; 22. Teaches a “Career Exploration” course; 23. Performs annual evaluations of recruitment efforts in regards to the College’s Strategic Plan evaluations; and 24. Performs other duties as assigned.
