Rebar boost

rebar share to around 40 percent of US consumption.

Commercial Metals Co (CMC) has reached a $600 million deal to acquire 33 US fabrication shops and four steel mills from Gerdau. The assets account for 23 percent of Gerdau’s North American melt capacity. The deal will leave Gerdau with three fabrication shops and give CMC 79 downstream fabrication facilities. Gerdau will retain the capability to produce rebar at several of its US facilities, but the acquisition could boost CMC’s US

The company stated that CMC will look to optimize production synergies in the markets served by both CMC mills and the newly acquired Gerdau facilities and, with the acquisition of the Jacksonville facility, CMC could also add wire rod to its product portfolio.

The mills in Knoxville, Rancho Cucamonga and Sayreville produce only rebar.
