Questions and answers

with James Dunning, CEO of Syrinix

n What does your company/department specialise in and why is it the best at what it does? Syrinix specialises in automated pipeline monitoring technologies with an initial focus on providing solutions for the water sector. Put another way, we provide water utilities with high-resolution, real-time information to help them operate their supply networks more efficiently. Why are we the best? Three reasons: First, because we work very hard to attract the best people in the game and then retain them by providing a stimulating and stretching work environment. Second, because the company’s background is in R&D, with Syrinx starting as a university spin-out, and we have very deliberately kept that R&D as a core strength of ours. Third, because we make a real point of sticking to what we do very well and then doing it very well too, ie delivering real value to customers in our chosen area. n What is main project you are working on at the moment? We are running several R&D projects at the moment, which are obviously confidential. Alongside that, Syrinix’s main focus at the moment is cementing its position as a strong participant in the international water sector. Yes, we are still young and quite small, but we are making tremendous inroads onto the global stage, and to see that transforming into enquiries and orders is testament to how effective our solutions are.

n Tell us about your role at your company and what your day-to-day work involves. I am the CEO of Syrinix and have been in the role since late 2010. There is never really a typical day, though that is, of course, part of the enjoyment of working at a relatively young company like Syrinix. At the moment I am heavily focused on growing our already significant customer base, in the UK and internationally, as well as working with colleagues across the business.
