Nampak Report 2018

OVERALL IMPACT OF NAMPAK FUNDING

In 2018 the WESSA Eco-Schools Programme reached 582 schools, 435 750 learners and 17 530 teachers . It is evident that the Eco-Schools programme is impactful to schools and communities on multiple levels, including improving teaching and learning of complex concepts, directing and influencing learners into new career paths, contributing to teacher development, whole school development and sustainability and responding to socio-ecological issues and challenges that affect communities.

Impacts schools and communities on multiple levels

Through the 2018 funding we received from Nampak, we were able to tailor our school programmes to directly speak to the everyday realities that teachers, learners and community members face . Coupled with this, a more streamlined approach enabled us to deepen the holistic development of our future leaders by introducing them to the social, environmental, political, cultural and economic aspects of the environment they live in. This empowered the learners to think more critically about their surroundings, both social and environmental, and become active citizens that want to make a change in their school and community . From understanding the complexity of the importance of a bee in an ecosystem to embracing the role of all South Africans in the growth of a healthy society, and what it means to be able to support a needy family with vegetables grown at school, the schools embraced every aspect of their Eco-Schools journey and continues to develop their skills to become the 21 st century leaders that we need – Nampak made all of this possible! We believe that our teachers play an integral role in developing our next generation of leaders and we therefore have invested in their growth and professional development. Through our 2018 Eco-Schools year, we were able to provide both accredited and non-accredited training to our Eco-Schools teachers to assist them with the task of preparing the learners for the next phases of their lives. Looking at real agendas such as the NDP and the SDGs, teachers were able to teach within the context of South Africa and the world, a connection that they could make through the resources that the Eco-Schools programme availed to them. More and more our communities are seeing the benefit of the Eco-Schools programme through the work the schools do but also through the assistance they can give to the schools. Our communities have become more involved in the health and well-being of the schools that serve their children by getting involved with gardening at school through intergenerational teaching of agriculture methods as well as assisting with clean-up campaigns and community and heritage projects. The Eco-Schools programme has truly become a Holistic development of our future leaders

community effort to come up with innovative solutions to our everyday challenges. We would not have been able to achieve these wonderful heights without partners who have the growth of the South African children at heart. Nampak’s support since 2003 has been instrumental in the development of the WESSA Eco-Schools programme and our ability to help shape the future of our children. We feel proud to have worked with Nampak and will marvel in all the good stories that Nampak has made possible through the Eco-Schools programme. We thank Nampak for the support and for helping us show schools across the country what they are capable of. THANK YOU VERY MUCH NAMPAK!
