3rd grade Instructional Guide

3rd Grade Math Scope & Sequence

Differentiation in Action

Model the Math : To scaffold students in writing equations to solve two-step word problems, teach them how to use the bar diagram. The bar diagram can help represent relationships and write equations. A bar diagram can be considered as a bridge between the text of the problem and the equations used to solve the problem. For example, the bar diagram below can be used to write the equation x = 98 + 165 to answer the hidden question shown.

Skill Building

Graphic Organizer: Enrichment 11-4: Students work in pairs to complete the sheet on Venn Diagrams as a warm up. Then, create their own Venn Diagrams using numbers that are alike and different. Have students trade their Venn Diagrams with another pair of students to solve.

Extension

Interdisciplinary Connections

Science

STEM project is not connected directly to 3rd grade Utah SEEd standards but could be used to extend math and science understanding.
