3rd grade Instructional Guide

3-ACT Math High Quality Implementation Checklist

3-ACT Math is a highly-engaging, whole group, multimedia experience that involves students in mathematical modeling. The 3-ACT Math lessons are found in the odd topics within enVision. These lessons are mapped into the scope and sequence. Additional 3-ACT Math lessons can be found in the Building Fact Fluency Kits.

Planning for a 3-ACT Math Task •

Preview the videos and work through all three parts of the task • Plan additional questions and scaffolds as needed • Consider if students will be writing or drawing on their recording sheet ACT 1 : Engage and Perplex (The Hook) Teacher • Share Act 1 video to provide just enough information to engage student • Pose questions: o What do you notice? o What do you wonder? o What questions do you have? • Display the Main Question • Survey class for a range of predictions • Record predictions for students to see Student • Observe the video or situation •

Discuss with each other what you notice and wonder • Brainstorm possible questions to ask about the situation • Record questions on the 3-ACT Math Recording Sheet

ACT 2: Seek Information and Solutions (The Model) Teacher

Student

• Ask: “What information do you need to answer the Main Question? I only give info you ask for.” • Share Act 2 video to reveal information • Record information as student identify it and keep information where students can refer to it • Ask: Does this information match your expectations? • Extend the task for fast finishers using the Sequel

• Ask questions to seek for information to answer the Main Question “If I knew ______, then I could figure out _____.” • Discuss whether the information from the teacher matches their expectations • Develop a mathematical model that represents the problem • Uses that model to answer the Main Question

ACT 3: Reveal, Discuss, Extend! (The Solution)

Teacher

Student

Reveal the answer to the question by showing Act 3 video Facilitate a conversation about student conjectures and solutions Extend for whole class (optional)

• Explain differences in their conjectures and the actual solution • Revise models based on what they saw in the Act 3 video
